Do you sometimes get super drunk in the first couple of drinks and then wonder the next day how that happened? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there at least once and while looking up the reasons for why we ended up sprawled on the floor, we found some things that shook us to our core.
It’s in the family: Yep, apparently if you’re getting sloshed way too quick, your father and possibly even your grandmother could be to blame. According to a research done at University of North Carolina, there is a gene called CYP2E1 that determines your tolerance for liquor, which can be inherited.
It’s all about the mood: Even in drinking, the placebo effect is real. Studies have shown that people start exhibiting drunkenness when they’re told there’s liquor in there glass, even if there isn’t any! So if you’re going out with the purpose of having a lit night, chances are you’ll get wasted.
Do you even lift, bro?: Because if not, you’re probably going to get sloshed quicker than all your fitness freak friends. People with lean muscle mass and less fat will absorb less alcohol than people of the same weight but more fat.
You’re getting older: Every time you’ve said ‘I’m too old for this shit’ after a shot, you’re probably right. The decrease of metabolism of alcohol in your stomach and the decline in body water as you age are responsible for getting you drunk quicker. Sadly you can’t do the 11 beers you did college and still expect to stand straight.
Low-fat isn’t always the best: Yep, you heard that right, if you’ve been on a low-fat or fat-free diet and go out for a night on the town, you’re going to be drunk before you know it. Fatty foods help the body absorb alcohol at a slower rate so maybe, just this once, make it a cheat day.
