5 Tiki Cocktails To Help You Beat The Heat

If you’re anything like me, the summers are probably making you extremely grumpy and uncomfortable. I’m constantly dreaming of drinking some Mai Tais on the beach, but considering I’m not in college anymore, these summer vacay dreams will remain just that. Either way, the next best thing is still getting some tiki drinks that look great and taste even better. Tiki cocktails are mostly tropical drinks with heaps of rum and fruits in them and will help you beat the heat. Don’t forget the paper umbrella when making these!

The Beachcomber

The Beachcomber is possibly one of the lightest tiki cocktail you’ll find but that helps you savour its flavour better. While there have been several iterations of the recipe over the years, sticking to the original when starting out is probably the best.

What you’ll need:

  • 60 ml light rum
  • 22 ml triple sec
  • 22 ml lime juice
  • 2 dashes maraschino liqueur
  • 1/4 tsp simple syrup (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice
  2. Shake well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass

Chief Lapu-Lapu

This lovely cocktail that’s been passed on from generation to generation when it comes to tiki bars, was named after a great Filipino ruler and hero. Just like him, this drink holds its own and makes it presence known.

What you’ll need: 

  •  44 ml orange juice
  • 30 ml lemon juice
  • 15 ml simple syrup
  • 15 ml passion fruit syrup
  • 22 ml dark Jamaican rum
  • 22 ml light unaged rum

Instructions:

  1. Add all ingredients to shaker filled with ice and shake well
  2. Pour unstrained into large glass
  3. Add more ice and serve

Pina Colada

You can’t possibly talk about tiki cocktails without mentioning the ultimate classic – the Pina Colada. This refreshing, creamy drink is super easy to whip up and gives any occassion an always-need tropical twist.

What you’ll need:

  • 45 ml light rum
  • 60 ml coconut milk
  • 60 ml fresh pineapple juice

Instructions:

  1. Add all ingredients into a shaker filled with ice
  2. Shake well and serve with a cherry and pineapple wedge

Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri

A strawberry daiquiri can make even the worst hit of us, extremely happy. This awesome twist to the classic daiquiri makes it even more beachy than before and who doesn’t like a generous dose of strawberries right?

What you’ll need:

  • 118 ml light rum
  • 1/2 cup fresh strawberries
  • 1/2 cup frozen strawberries
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • Sliced lime for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Add rum, fresh and frozen strawberries, and lime juice
  2. Blend well and pour into two glasses
  3. Garnish and serve

Pisco Punch

Can you believe the Pisco Sour has been around for 150 years?! Obviously in those 150 years, many variations of the cocktail have occurred. One of the most delicious twists on the famous drink is the Pisco Punch that’s great when you’re hosting a large party.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 pineapple cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 750 ml Pisco
  • 2 cups simple syrup
  • 1.5 tsp grated lime peel
  • 1.5 tsp grated grapefruit peel
  • 2/3 cup fresh lemon juice

Instructions:

  1. Put pineapple pieces in a large jar and pour the Pisco over it
  2. Cover the jar and refrigerate for 3 days, shaking once in a while
  3. Divide the simple syrup into two separate bowls
  4. Mix the grated grapefruit in 1 bowl and grated lime peel into the other
  5. Cover and refrigerate both overnight
  6. Strain the infused Pisco into a pitcher, discard the pineapple pieces
  7. Strain both refrigerated syrups into the Pisco
  8. Add lemon juice into the mix and stir well
  9. Serve in pitcher or separate glasses
