While Jay may not be much of a drinker, The Great Gatsby wouldn’t be great without extravagant parties and the rich drinking all the time. Amongst the many drinks mentioned, including Singapore Slings, Mint Juleps, and lots of champagne, the Gin Rickey seemed to tickle Jay’s fancy the most.

Made of lime juice, gin, simple syrup, and soda, the drink is extremely easy to make. Maybe it’s time to throw your own Gatsby-esque party. Here is the recipe to make the Gin Rickey cocktail.

Ingredients

  • ½ ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed
  • 2 ounces gin
  • Club soda, to top
  • Garnish: lime wheels

How To Make Gin Rickey

  1. Take a highball glass and fill it with ice.
  2. Now add in the gin and lime juice.
  3. Top it with club soda.
  4. Lastly, garnish the cocktail with 2 lime wheels.

  • 2 ounces of pineapple juice
  • 1 ¼  ounces dark rum
  • 1 ÂĽ ounces light rum

3.Ebenezer Scrooge – Smoking Bishop

If you haven’t read A Christmas Carol as a kid, what were you doing? The tale of grumpy old Ebenezer Scrooge finding out the true meaning of Christmas is a must-read. Fans like me always wanted to know what Scrooge meant when he asked Bob to discuss affairs over a Smoking Bishop.

This mulled wine or punch was highly popular at Christmas time during the Victorian Era and was made with red wine, port, lemons, sugar, and spices. If you’re up to the task, there are several recipes to recreate this delicious and favorite drink online. Get to it!

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle of full-bodied fruity red wine (750ml)
  • 1 bottle ruby port (750ml)
  • 5 cinnamon sticks
  • 36 pieces of cloves
  • 4 ounces brown sugar or sweetener,
  • 5 oranges
  • ÂĽ teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 grapefruit
  • 2-star anise pods
  • ÂĽ teaspoon ground mace
  • ÂĽ teaspoon whole allspice

How To Make Smoking Bishop

  1. Firstly, preheat the oven to 350°F. Now wash the oranges and grapefruit and pat them dry.
  2. Once the fruits are dry, slice each fruit and insert six cloves into it.
  3. Now, in a baking tray, place the sliced fruits neatly.
  4. Cook the fruits on both sides equally for about 45 minutes or until golden brown. Once done, keep the fruits for cooling.
  5. Now, in a microwave, heat brown sugar and 3 cups of wine for about 4 minutes.
  6. Now, into a slow cooker, pour the mixture of wine, brown sugar, and the remaining wine spices, and cook it on a low flame.
  7. Meanwhile, cut up the cooked fruits into quarters and transfer them to the same cooker. Slow-cook the mixture for about 4 hours.
  8. Once done, remove the pieces of fruit carefully using a lemon squeezer and press out all the juice and wine back into the cooker.
  9. Now take a big bowl and strain the wine mixture, and after straining, pour the mixture back into the cooker.
  10. Take the cinnamon sticks out and rinse off the pulp nicely, then place the sticks back in the cooker.
  11. Add a port to the slow cooker.
  12. Now reduce the heat to the low setting for 1 hour. Then reduce the setting to warm, and voila, your drink is ready to be served.

4.Hannibal Lecter – Chianti

Hannibal Lecter might just be the greatest villain we’ve ever seen in books (and film and TV) and possibly also the most sophisticated. His taste for the finer and, um, flincher things in life is apparent in one of Silence of the Lambs’ most iconic lines.

Anthony Hopkins plays Dr. Lecter, who speaks of eating a man’s liver ‘with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.” While we highly discourage the liver part of the meal, we do suggest finding rich friends that can indulge you with the opulent Chianti wine made in the Chianti regions of France.

Ingredients

  • 16 ounces chilled pomegranate juice
  • 1 bottle of Chianti (750 ml)
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 bottle of Prosecco (750 ml), chilled
  • 1 orange, sliced into rounds and quartered
  • 4 tablespoons brandy
  • 1 lime, sliced into rounds and quartered

How To Make Chianti

  1. Combine all the ingredients Chianti, pomegranate juice, sugar, and brandy, stirring to dissolve sugar.
  2. Add orange and lime slices and chill.
  3. Gently stir in Prosecco before serving.

5. Patrick Bateman – J&B on the Rocks

American Psycho was a defining book in the world of literature with its gore and its take on American homogenization and the world of money and drugs on Wall Street. Patrick Bateman, the homicidal maniac, was part of a very elite group of men (read: snooty, rich assholes) who enjoyed their drinks in a very particular way.

Patrick’s favorite was a J&B on the Rocks, a great choice of scotch whiskey for someone so despicable. If you were to go by the movie starring Christian Bale, you could also try out a J&B straight along with a Corona, unless you’re (as Patrick would say) a peasant like us. Here is the recipe for J&B on the Rocks, one of the most iconic men in literature’s favorite cocktails.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces J&B Scotch whiskey
  • 1 to 6 ounces of club soda, to taste

How To Make J&B on the Rocks

  1. Take a highball glass and fill it with ice cubes.
  2. Now pour the J&B Scotch whiskey and club soda.
  3. Give it a good mix and voila your cocktail is ready to be served.
