If You’re An Alcohol Lover, You Need to Visit Kerala For These 5 Reasons

Kerala is ‘God’s Own Country’ for many reasons. The greenery, the hills and a hundred other things make this place a true paradise! You should visit that state at least once for all of its goodness. But if you are a liquor lover, you should visit this place, every year, every month and every long weekend. Why, you ask? Read on!

Their Unconditional Love For Alcohol: Did you know that during last Onam, Kerala’s favorite festival, they drank up alcohol worth Rs 410 crores? We aren’t shitting you, that’s how intertwined their life and alcohol are. No festival, no occasion and no day is complete without it! You drink an entire quarter during a party you boast? That’s an under-performing Wednesday for a ‘mallu.’ So now if you see your mallu friend destroying bottle after bottle, know that it’s just in his blood.

Kallu: Do we need to say more? Toddy, aka Kallu, is served across the local liquor shops in Kerala, and these local bars are called ‘Kallu Shappu.’ It’s where your drunken dreams come true. Its ambiance screams shady (daaru in matka) and you will be surprised to see how easy it is on your pocket. Please don’t hop into the first one you see out of excitement; you won’t drive much further if you do. There is one in almost every corner.

Variety Of Chaknas: The best part about being to a Kallu Shappu is the food. Nothing on earth can beat the chilly fish curry, deep fried pomfret or a beef fry at these places. Trust us, your super chef moms would look like novices next to these extravagant menus. So elaborate and diverse, these dishes will make you cry tears of joy (vegetarians will just have to cry normal tears. Kallu Shappu is a holy shrine of all that’s good and non-veg). Oh, just a warning that you might have to shoot out goblets of fire from your burning ass the next morning.

Close To Nature And Alcohol At Once: Have you ever given your taste buds a chance to experience alcohol in its purest form? Nah, obviously not! In Kerala, and you will taste ‘Thengin Kallu’, which is fresh distilled liquor from coconut trees; which is absolutely phenomenal. Yes, it’s for real. Mallus strongly believe that this was the drink of gods, and we don’t disagree.

Subsidized Drinking Places: Kerala is close to Pondicherry, but know that they have their own Pondi called Mayyazhi, also known as Mahi (please note that it’s Mahi and not Mahim). If you are done soaking in all the local daaru, hit a bar in Mayyazhi to drink royal liquor at a super chindi price. So, that’s the way, Mahi way.
