Wine & Pizza Pairings You Need To Try

When I ran out of beer one day, I chose to finish the pizza off with a glass of wine, only to have my eureka moment. It was perfect enough for it to become pizza my new favourite combo. A little research told me that I am not alone in this, pizza does go extremely well with wine. Here are a few pairings that are worth a shot.

The classic pepperoni & Syrah: This is the best form of pizza and it never ceases to amaze us with its simplicity and bang on flavours. Since the pizza is so dang acidic in nature, fruity wines go best with it. A Syrah or Shiraz, an Italian Chianti or a Cabernet Sauvignon can be the best bud for your pepperoni pizza.

The meat feast pizza & Shiraz: Indians love the meat overloaded pizzas  filled with kebabs, tikkas, ham or sausages, which go incredibly well with smooth reds from Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. They will handle the meat overdose perfectly well.

The veggie lover’s pizza & Sauvignon Blanc: It’s true that I will never call for this one solely by my choice, but if I am forced to eat one, I know how to make it better.  A pizza loaded with bell peppers, olive, mushrooms and paprika should go with cool crisp wines. Sauvignon Blanc works like magic, a dry rose with good acidity will also do just fine.

Hawaiian pizza & white wine: We know this pizza is quite the controversial one, with a pineapple topping and all. Since the pizza packs enough fruitiness and acidity, go with any normal white wine that doesn’t break the bank.

Barbecue chicken pizza & Malbec: Probably the most popular pizza of all time, the pizza comes with a sweet smoky flavour. A Malbec or a Touriga Nacional work wonders since both are fruit forward (less alcohol, more fruity aromas), and pair great with barbecue sauce.
