When I first heard about coffee beers not too long ago, I was stumped. Why in the world had something that brought together two of my very favourite drinks on Earth been kept a secret from me all this while? Why did I not deserve to have this nectar of the gods? Well, several dramatic moments later, I set out to find some cool coffee beers that I’d like and found a whole new world in the process.
Ballast Point’s ‘Victory At Sea’
The coffee porter to rule them all (wait, wrong reference but still holds true) – Ballast Point Victory At Sea could possibly be your next favourite. Not only is it infused with coffee beans straight from San Diego’s iconic Caffe Calabria, it has a special vanilla bean kick for thos who like their beer out of the ordinary. Smooth and bold with just the right hint of sweetness, this is a beer that deserves your full attention.
Big Alice Brewing’s ‘Date Night, Bro?’
Aww come on, tell me you aren’t already sold on the cute name and the beautiful packaging? Well if that’s not enough to get you up in the morning, here’s what will – this beer comes with taste of classic America. Although it is a light-tasting beer owing to its slight sweetness and mid-range ABV (Alcohol By Volume), it does taste like donuts dunked in coffee and there’s literally nothing else we want.
Avery Brewing Co’s ‘Tweak’
17% ABV. Yep, you heard that right – this beer’s got 17% ABV. So obviously, this isn’t for the beginners or children (actually, no beer is for children). Tweak packs a punch, especially since it was aged in bourbon barrels for four months. It tastes of brandy, tobacco – you name it. If you’ve had enough of the slightly sweeter beers, Tweak is definitely your best bet.
Goose Island’s ‘Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout’
This beer has always been regarded as one of the very best coffee beers out there. And not without reason considering it’s got some of the very best coffee from intelligentsia Coffee Roasters based in Chicago. Goose Island tends to use different varieties of coffee every year and it results in a unique yet fulfilling bottle every single time.
Terrapin’s ‘Wake n Bake Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout’
A lot has been said about Terrapin and with their association with The Walking Dead, they have an ardent fan in me, but there’s a possibility Wake n Bake is even better. It’s creamy and thick and mixes what we love about beer with a classic breakfast of oatmeal in one! Most consumers also admit to having tasted dark chocolate in this. How could it get better?
