5 Eco-Friendly Spirit Brands You Should Know About

A report by the Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable concluded that the production of a standard 750 ml liquor bottle emits six pounds of carbon dioxide into our environment. This only goes on to establish further that the production of liquor leaves a huge carbon footprint behind. To reduce the negative environmental impact, spirit companies are starting to implement sustainable practices in their pre and post production processes.

1. Chandon

Chandon, a Californian wine label with an award-winning sparkling wine, has implemented an extremely natural pest control system! Instead of using chemical pesticides to protect its produce in the vineyards, the wine label has placed owl boxes on its property to encourage owls to do what they are great at – eliminating pests! Not only is Chandon offering chemical-free wines to the public but it is also providing owls with a safe place to nest and sustain themselves.

2. Patrón

Patrón has been riding on the sustainable wagon with full devotion. The tequila label uses a modern water treatment system to collect clean water from their production process, which is used in cooling towers and for cleaning purposes later. The Patrón distillery reduced their carbon emissions by installing a natural gas pipeline to meet their energy needs. Also, the company collects agave fiber waste from their distillery and the surrounding distilleries to create fertilizer compost. Moreover, Patrón has replanted 3,000 trees and reforested/donated 16,000 trees to avoid reducing the forest area near its plant.

3. Reyka

Reyka has been making this world better by giving us one of the finest vodkas to ever grace this planet, by using the most sustainable practices to maintain its distillery. Located in Iceland, the craft vodka label uses natural geothermal energy to power its plant, thus reducing its carbon footprint. By using pure water from Arctic springs, Reyka vodka uses only a single round of distillation to produce its smooth vodka. This drastically reduces their overall energy consumption units.

4. Fourpure Brewing Co.

The craft beer label acknowledged the negative effects its brewery and production process have on the environment, and has worked towards making their operations sustainable. The company has worked hard to reduce its water usage, setting goals for coming years and working efficiently to hit the targets. It has educated its staff on separating recyclable products from the non-recyclable ones and pressured their suppliers into reducing their use of non-recyclable product packaging. The company also puts efforts into diverting their co-products to feed cattles, currently feeding more than 1000 cattle a week.

5. Ramsbury

Ramsbury company has majorly implemented three eco-friendly practices to reduce their carbon footprint. The distillery is powered by heat generated from a biomass boiler on its property, which uses wood in a sustainable manner. The used wheat from the distillery is diverted as livestock feed and all the waste water generated from the production process is filtered by a wildlife-friendly reed bed system.

These spirit labels are doing their bit in encouraging sustainable company operations. How would you like Indian spirit companies to implement the thought? Tell us in the comments below.
