5 Mezcal Cocktails You Should Try

Mezcal is making waves in the spirit industry. An old cousin of tequila, the Mexican liquor has already become popular among alcohol enthusiasts all over the world. Maybe you will come across a bottle of the liquor soon, and when you do, you need some cocktail recipes at hand. We’re here to help!

1. Mezcal Sour

Most of us are acquainted with the cocktail Whiskey Sour but here comes a refreshing variant of it that uses mezcal as its base spirit. The earthy flavours of mezcal highlight the fruity flavours of the orange juice and give you a cocktail you can sip on a sunny day.

What you’ll need:

  • 60 ml mezcal
  • 30 ml orange juice
  • 15 ml lemon
  • 10 ml agave syrup
  • 1 egg white
  • 4 ice cubes
  • 1 orange wheel

Instructions:

  1. Add mezcal, orange juice, lemon juice and agave syrup to a shaker
  2. Shake well
  3. Add egg white to it and shake again
  4. Add ice to it and shake again
  5. Strain into a glass
  6. Garnish with an orange wheel and serve

2. Ahumado Seco

The Ahumado Seco is a delicious balance of light and bright flavours of hibiscus and ginger, and the strong flavour of mezcal. The recipe calls for home-made hibiscus agua fresca as one of the ingredients but fret not, it’s easy to make.

What you’ll need:

  • 45 ml mezcal
  • 22 ml ginger liqueur
  • 120 ml simple syrup
  • 120 ml lemon juice
  • 1 cup dried hibiscus
  • 1 lt water
  • 1 cup peeled and chopped ginger
  • 1 orange peel and ginger zest
  • Crushed ice

Instructions:

  1. To make hibiscus agua fresca, add hibiscus, water and chopped ginger into a saucepan
  2. Simmer on low heat for 15 min
  3. Keep aside to cool 
  4. Strain and add simple syrup and lemon juice to it
  5. Shake and refrigerate for 1 hour
  6. Add 75 ml to a shaker
  7. Add all the other ingredients to it and shake well
  8. Pour over crushed ice in a glass
  9. Garnish with orange peel and ginger zest, and serve

3. Orange Maria

This cocktail makes for a perfect brunch beverage. The flavours of fresh carrot juice and ginger spice complement all types of brunch meals while the mezcal gives you the feeling of a summer breezy day.

What you’ll need:

  • 60 ml mezcal
  • 15 ml fresh carrot juice
  • 15 ml ginger beer
  • 15 ml fresh orange juice
  • 1 lime wheel
  • 4 ice cubes

Instructions:

  1. Add ice to a glass
  2. Pour mezcal, orange juice and ginger beer and orange juice over it
  3. Stir and garnish with a lime wheel
  4. Serve 

4. Scorpion Reef

This cocktail was inspired by a smoked pineapple flan. As a result, you have this pineapple-flavoured mezcal cocktail to make your summer months great!

What you’ll need:

  • 30 ml mezcal
  • 30 ml rum
  • 30 ml fresh pineapple juice
  • 22 ml fresh lemon juice
  • 22 ml orgeat
  • 2 dashes chocolate bitters
  • 5-6 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Crushed ice

Instructions:

  1. Mix all the ingredients, except for Angostura bitters, in a glass
  2. Fill half of the glass with crushed ice
  3. Stir and add crushed ice to fill the glass
  4. Float the Angostura bitters on top and serve

5. Ready Fire Aim

This mezcal cocktail packs a smoky punch in a glass. The home-made honey pineapple syrup provides the drink a sweet aftertaste, for which the recipe is mentioned below. 

What you’ll need:

  • 55 ml mezcal
  • 22 ml pineapple juice
  • 15 ml fresh lime juice
  • 3 dashes habanero shrub
  • 2 cups honey
  • 1 cup water
  • 50 pink peppercorns
  • 1 pineapple, cubed

Instructions:

  1. Mix 2 cups of honey with 1 cup of water
  2. Crush pink peppercorns and pineapple in a container together
  3. Add it to the honey and water mixture
  4. Let it sit overnight and strain the next day
  5. Keep 30 ml aside of this honey pineapple syrup
  6. Add this 30 ml of this syrup and all the other ingredients into a shaker
  7. Add ice to it and shake well
  8. Strain into a chilled face and serve
