Gone are the days of having traditional beer with your friends, it’s passe now. With the craft beer revolution, came delicious beers but also came some extremely strange flavours that’ll make you go ‘HAIN?’ out loud. Here are just a few of them:
Bilk
When Japan had a surplus of milk with a lot of it going to waste, a drinks shop owner came to the rescue by creating Bilk – a milk beer. With 30% of beer being milk, this one’s got to be one of the strangest solutions to milk surplus anyone could come up with.
Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout
Did there need to really be an oyster-flavoured beer in this world, you ask? Well no, but Flying Dog Brewery Company made one way anyway. The proceeds do help a not-for-profit organisation that’s trying to revive the oyster population in Chesapeake Bay and the beer is actually pretty tasty, so you know it’s worth trying.
Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout
You’re thinking why I would add another oyster beer in the list, but this actually has, well there’s no easy way of putting it… it’s got bull testicles. By Wynkoop Brewing Company, this is said to have a meaty flavour, so you know you’re getting the real deal as opposed to all those…fake bull testicles.
Bacon Maple Ale
Ahh, bacon and maple syrup, what a great combination. Rogue + Voodoo Doughnut take it a notch higher by making a beer of it, and damn, what a way to go. It tastes of smoky meat and pure maple. Ain’t nothing wrong with it.
Key Lime Pie
Modelled after one of America’s favourite desserts, the Key Lime Pie beer by Short’s Brewing is made with marshmallow fluff, lime, milk, sugar and added graham crackers. Everything about this sounds right yet so wrong, but at least it manages to intrigue you.
