6 Cocktails That Are Just Too Overrated, According To Us

A glass of dirty martini, one of the overrated cocktails

Imagine this – you enter a bar, all set to get wasted for the week. You move your eyes over the menu, only to choose a drink that you see everyone hyping up. You don’t get the hype, but, hey, the invincible peer-pressure trap sucks you in and you order it without a second thought. Here’s a list of such overrated cocktails (according to us, okay?), that we think ride the hype wave a little too much. Read through to find out if your favorite drink makes it to this list – but don’t get offended either ways.

Cocktails That Are Just Too Overrated, According To Us

  1. LIIT
  2. Sex On The Beach
  3. Dry Manhattan
  4. Dirty Martini
  5. Bloody Mary
  6. Mojito

The Long Island Iced Tea (LIIT)

“Yeah, it must be just iced tea” – no, iced tea isn’t in the room with us. Instead, this amber-colored concoction combines vodka, light rum, tequila, triple sec, gin, and a hint of cola. At first glance, the popularity of this drink seems directly related to how much alcohol it packs. And, don’t get us wrong, it is a mindblowing cocktail if you are a certified risk-taker. But, we think that this boozy iced tea can be substituted for something that’s less intense and easy on your liver, especially if you’re a newbie.

Sex On The Beach

It’s difficult to resist the temptation of trying suggestively named drinks. After all, there’s a reason they are named that way – to attract eyeballs and raise some brows. Well, the Sex On The Beach is one such drink that is a go-to for many. Add to it the delicious fruity flavors and you instantly expand its fanbase. We understand the hype of this salaciously-named drink, given its promiscuous name, but why not switch up to the fruity side? If you’re someone who cannot keep a straight face while ordering this drink, we recommend ordering a fruity drink like the Sangria. Sex On The Beach could be postponed to some other day!

Dry Manhattan

Let’s be honest here – no one really likes it dry. In the context of cocktails, of course! The Manhattan has earned itself a ‘classic’ status in the world of cocktails, and no one’s here to deny that. However, the proportions that make up a Manhattan can be experimented with, to create newer versions of the classic Manhattan. The dry vermouth flattens the drink sometimes. The Dry Manhattan’s classic status might set it apart from the rest, but it’s time we dampen our throats. Many bartenders thus recommend going beyond the ordinary, and ordering yourself Manhattan-inspired drinks. You have Rob Roy, Black Manhattan, Red Hook, Tequila Manhattan, and the list goes on and on.

Dirty Martini

There’s no argument that the Martini is one of the most recognizable cocktails in the world. The universal appeal it has garnered, thanks to frequent features in TV shows and movies, has catapulted it into invincible stardom. However, where does it stand on the hype-o-meter? The Martini, especially its ‘dirty’ version, adds a touch of salty, olive brine that might not please your taste buds. Plus, not chilling the glass enough, or a miscalculation of any sorts will make you feel like you’re sipping on straight up olive oil. Doesn’t sound quite appetizing, does it?

We understand that ordering a Dirty Martini works great in just about any occasion. It also instantly makes you the feisty main character in the bar. But, a little experimenting hurts nobody. Play around with the proportions of Martini ingredients, and you might end up creating a version that is not as hyped as the Dirty Martini, but refreshing enough.

Bloody Mary

Remember the chokehold that the urban legend of the Bloody Mary had on us in our childhoods? Now, we as adults are hooked onto its cocktail versions. You could say that the Bloody Mary is a tangy and spicy blend of seemingly contrasting flavors – you have tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauces, garlic, herbs, lemon juice and of course, vodka. We think you could spice things up by opting for a Bloody Caesar, Mayan Michelada or a Red Snapper instead. Say bye-bye to your usual Bloody Mary!

Mojito

Don’t lie – we all have gone through our Mojito era. The phase of our lives when we couldn’t get enough of this beginner-friendly drink. The Mojito with its generous splash of rum and freshly squeezed lime juice is easy-breezy-lemon-squeezy, quite literally. So popular that some of us aren’t able to move past this zesty cocktail. But, it’s time you shed your comfort zone and try out drinks that are just as refreshing as the classic Mojito.

You have a gazillion different variations of the Mojito with different fruity flavors – be it strawberry, pineapple, coconut, raspberry, blueberry, and so much more. Time to experiment!

Summing It Up

Overrated cocktails aren’t bad – don’t get us wrong – they deserve the love they get. But, we think you can easily go a little out of the box by ditching the ordinary (and overrated). The underdogs deserve some spotlight and the hype-bees deserve a break. No offense, but did your favorite go-to drink make it to this list?
