Kolkata is renowned for its iconic tram rides, yellow taxis, Durga Pujo pandals, and more. Recently, however, the city has been making headlines for a different reason — liquor sales. Yes, you read that right! Known as the ‘City of Joy,’ Kolkata recorded liquor sales worth INR 137 crore during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, according to sources from the Excise Department reported by India Today TV. This impressive revenue was generated in just eight days, from December 24 to December 31, 2024. This INR 137 crore showcases a 24% increase in liquor sales compared to the same period in 2023.
Kolkata’s Excise Department has four administrative districts: Kolkata North, Kolkata South, Alipore, and Bidhannagar. Among these, Alipore recorded the highest liquor sales, totaling a whopping INR 42 crore. Kolkata North ranked second with sales of INR 35.5 crore, followed closely by Kolkata South, which also reported sales of INR 35.5 crore. Bidhannagar came in last, with total liquor sales of INR 28.5 crore.

Besides this, it’s interesting to note that, in the non-festive months, West Bengal’s liquor sales average around INR 1,700 crore per month, with Kolkata contributing approximately INR 300 crore.
