5 Things That Happened at Oktoberfest

When your best friend wins free passes to a fancy ass event, it’s great. But when there is free beer involved, it’s the probably the best thing to have happened to you all month. German Days, a mini replica of the insanely popular Oktoberfest is happening over three days at Mahalaxmi Race Course and I had free passes. Here’s why I loved my first Oktoberfest experience.

Free alcohol: We had a couple pass, which meant two litres of beer for free. I only realised this at the gate and I did a little jig and thanked my stars. I was raring to go and to check out what this evening had in store for me.

Overpriced, weird finger food: I had free coupons worth 600 rupees and all I could get was a plate of fries and chicken nuggets. This certainly wasn’t a highlight of the evening.

Such variety of beer: Pfft, please. It’s German Days we’re talking about and it’d have been a shame if they didn’t have a good selection of beer. They collaborated with Erdinger to bring the very finest beer to Mumbai. Being a beer novice myself, all I knew was that I needed to try out a normal-seeming beer but couldn’t help myself and got a coffee-flavoured one too. The coffee one was so good that I have been up for 16 hours and there are no signs of me crashing.

The music: It wouldn’t be Oktoberfest without music, dance and revelry. An authentic German band was playing and although, I didn’t understand a single word, it was loads of fun. An Austrian girl who was shaking a leg throughout the event kept pulling people in for impromptu dances, and I loved every bit of it. Beer in one hand and crazy dance moves, I am all in.

The people: Everyone seemed uptight and elitist when the evening began. All of them sat at their benches and tapped their feet. But then, the beer did wonders. Towards the end of the night, everyone was jumping around, spilling beer and smiling from ear to ear. What’s there to complain about?
