Located in the outskirts of Pune in Pirangut, the nanobrewery Kimaya Brewing Co has been silently taking over the craft beer market in the city. With only a ‘keg’ business model in place, the brewery has been supplying its delicious brews to popular restro bars in Pune and Mumbai.
Kimaya, which means ‘divine magic’ in Marathi, has been co-founded by brothers Saurabh and Sameer Patwardhan. The name is an ode to their doctor grandmother who had patients referring to her clinic as ‘Kimaya’ in the 1950s.
Kimaya was started when Saurabh returned from the US and started to brew beers at home. To shape his dreams into a reality, Sameer, an established brewer in the US, decided to join his brother. Thus, Kimaya Brewing Co was established.
Abiding by the keg model, the nanobrewery is a production-only establishment. It supplies its brews to restro bars like Malaka Spice in Pune and The Boston Butt in Mumbai. Working on such a small scale, Saurabh and Sameer are able to experiment with their brews. The brothers have been successful in brewing delicious beer from buckwheat in the past.
But their most popular brew has been the Vanilla Porter. It’s a dark style beer, in which the bitterness of the chocolate malt is perfectly balanced by the sweet vanilla. This brew is popular for its delicious aftertaste.
Their India Pale Ale is appreciated for its flavoursome aroma and the hop-heavy taste, while the Irish Red Ale, for its malty ale flavours and the reddish hue.
The delectable Belgian Witbier, a type of light Belgian Ale that is brewed from wheat, coriander and herbs, is known for its orange peel-citrus notes.
Kimaya also brews a Lite beer, that is available at only Farzi Cafe. As the name suggests, it is a light beer with an extremely low alcohol content.
The nanobrewery makes it a point to locally-source its produce, machinery and materials required in the production process. It goes a step further by employing local youth in its operational works.
