Krsma Wine: A New Star In Making

To know that there are some great wines in the market that are purely desi makes my heart beat with pride. To add to the list, here is Krsma wine – an Indian premium boutique wine that has wowed enthusiasts in the city of Bangalore as well as in the busy city of New York. Surprising, isn’t it?

Founded by the Hyderabad-based couple, Krishna Prasad and Uma Chigurupati, Krsma wine takes its name from its founders – ‘Krs’ from Krishna and ‘ma’ from Uma. The super-premium wines by the husband-wife team are a product of a carefully-tended vineyard, which is located in the Hampi Hills in Karnataka, and a winery that is located 375 km from Hyderabad.

The wines are produced with the best grapes from each harvest, ensuring that the quality promised is maintained throughout. The power couple visit the vineyard personally to decide the harvest dates and check the quality of the soil and grape yields. Chigurupati tastes the ripe grapes to make harvesting decisions and goes as far as selecting yeast for the fermentation process. As a result of the attentive tending, a small batch of the wines are produced, with an approximate of 3000 cases a year.

Krsma Estate offers six wines under its label

Cabernet Sauvignon – This is an intense fruit-driven wine that boasts the notes and aroma of berries, cherries and spices, with a hint of oak to it. The wine is bottled at around 13.2% ABV.

Sangiovese – This wine is known for its garnet colour. It flaunts notes of red cherries and brown spices, and an aroma of berries and jasmine. The wine is bottled at 12.7%-13.6% ABV.

Sauvignon Blanc – As mesmerizing on the palate as on the eyes, this wine offers a fruity aroma with notes of gooseberry acidity. It is bottled at 12%-13% ABV.

Chardonnay – This beautiful golden-coloured wine packs notes of peach, pineapple and vanilla, and a floral-fruity and citrus aroma. It is bottled at 12.3%-13% ABV.

KRSMA K2 – A Cabernet Sauvignon, the KRSMA K2 was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. This wine hit the market in 2013 with a punch of red fruits, berries and an oaky hint. It was bottled at 12.7% ABV.

Syrah – This rich wine was much-awaited when it was rolled out in 2016. Offering the flavour of blackberries, dried black currants and mocha, and an aroma of rose flower and spices, the wine was appreciated for its unforgettable finish. It was bottled at 11.6% ABV.

Since Krsma wines are not a product of a laid-down recipe, each bottle of these vintage wines is unique in its own way.

While the wines are aged in French oak barrels, the bottles are imported from France, the labels from Australia and natural corks from the US. No wonder, Krsma wines have won awards such as ‘China Wine and Spirit Awards 2013’ and ‘New Zealand International Wine Show 2012’. Krsma Estate also won the ‘Best Indian Winery’ award in 2018.

If you want to get yourself a bottle of a delicious wine from Krsma, you will have to purchase one in Bangalore or Hyderabad, New York or Maldives, as the wines are available only in these four regions currently. The bottles are priced at around INR 750 to INR 1500.
