As Mexico has tequila to show off, India has Feni. A Goan alcoholic concoction, Feni is distilled from cashew apples and is sold commercially and non-commercially in the state. Containing high alcohol content, it is advised to consume the drink in moderation.
In Goa, many family-run old businesses are engaged in the production of Feni, many setting up boutique distilleries and compact production units around their residence itself. Producing the alcohol in small batches and in a systematic manner ensures quality control and a standardized product that can be made commercially available to enthusiasts. One such distillery is Rhea Distillery which was founded by Antonio Jose Henriques decades ago. It is believed to be one of the oldest operating distilleries in Goa.
Located in Nuvem, Rhea Distillery has been a manufacturer of Feni and IMFL since its establishment. It was one of the very first distilleries to sell bottled feni in the state and is known for its three feni offerings –

- Rhea Heritage Reserve Cashew Feni is a feni of supreme quality. It has a sophisticated character and a fruit-forward flavour profile. A contemporary take on feni, it is produced from the highest quality of handpicked cashew fruits. The ingredients are traditionally-processed, with skillful distillation techniques maintaining the natural flavours in the spirit. The feni is matured for around 4 years in wooden casks before it is bottled and commercially distributed. It is best enjoyed when consumed neat.
- Rhea’s Harmony is a honey-flavoured feni that blends natural honey and fresh cinnamon flavours with cashew feni. The sweet flavour profile makes it a perfect concoction for cocktails and also makes it suitable as an ice cream topping.
