Umqombothi : A kind of Xhosa beer brewed from corn, this has very less alcohol content. So for those who like to play it safe, this is perfect. This beer is usually consumed in groups and is also rich with vitamin B. A healthy beer, everyone. That’s the dream.
Witblits: Imagine an excellent cross between white wine and brandy. When the name literally translates to “White lighting” or “firewater”, you know it’s no child’s play. This grape-fermented amateur brandy is a stronger version of American moonshine. A staple drink across the western Cape, this one is too cool a drink to miss.
Mampoer: If Witblits is a bit too much for you, here’s a fruitier alternative. It can be fermented from pretty much anything from peach, apricot, litchi, and any other fruit. Groot Marico is where you go if you want a fine glass of Mampoer.
Amarula: Do a little research on Amarula on Youtube and it will leave you in splits in no time. We have seen animals go crazy after consuming this delicious fruit and the natives have put this quality of it to good use. It’s a sweet and creamy liqueur which can be an excellent mixer in Irish coffee or Baileys. But it can be enjoyed just on the rocks, if you can keep down that kind of sweetness and alcohol.
Van Der Hum Liqueur: Although this drink is a South African favourite today, it was invented by a Dutch man. The original recipe of this liqueur combines spices, herbs, sugar, tangerines, pot still brandy, and diluted wine. It’s strong, bold and one of a kind. Named after the inventor, this drink is a must try!
