Organic Wine: A New Trend In India?

If you look around a supermarket, you will spot a section of organic products – ranging from farm produce to cosmetics. Organic is in, because millennials care about what they are putting in their bodies! To benefit from this new trend, winemakers from across the globe are introducing organic wines for their conscious consumer-base.

Since India has some catching up to do with respect to wine consumption when compared to other nations, the organic wine trend hasn’t spread like wildfire yet. But local winemakers in the country are establishing organic vineyards to profit on this growing trend on a small and selective scale.

To better understand this trend, you need to know what organic wine is exactly. In the simplest terms, organic wine is made from organically-grown grapes – which means that the grapes used to produce these wines are free of any chemical fertilizers, pesticides and other chemical substances. To grow organic grapes, some winemakers use natural fertilizers and pesticides like cow dung and neem powder to protect the grapevines and ensure a profitable yield.

But you also need to know the reasons that are responsible for the trend’s popularity. Organic wines do not give you headache-filled hangovers. This is because these wines do not contain sulphites, which is used in the grape-growing and wine-making processes for reasons like an increased shelf life. Also, organic wines pack less sugar and more antioxidant resveratrol than regular wines, making it healthier to consume. And the most important reason – organic wines taste better! As there is no involvement of any chemical substances in the winemaking process, the wine tastes fresher and is more aromatic.

Organic wines are priced 10%-13% higher than your regular wines because the organic winemaking process is more labour intensive and requires extreme attention to the minute of details. Currently, the market in India is dominated by local winemakers who produce the delicious beverage with only a little over a thousand cases a year. But if you are looking to relax with a bottle of an organic wine this weekend, you can give the Naara-Aaba kiwi wine a shot!
