Over the last 8 years, the craft brewery phenomenon has exploded in India, and it has come to be well-loved amongst the beer masses. If you are one of those who’ve embraced craft beer, you should definitely know and visit the oldest microbreweries in India. Here’s a list that will help you plan your next beer adventure.

Toit, Bangalore

Toit in Bangalore, established in 2011, is like the most lovable and favoured person in a group, who never ever disappoints. With three levels of large floor areas and an ambience that can lure any craft beer lover, this brewpub should definitely be high up on your list of places to visit when in Bangalore. Oh, and they have amazing brewery tours on the 1st Saturday of every month which lasts for about 1.5 hours, so make plans accordingly. The Tin Tin Toit is by far the most popular beer on their tap.

The Biere Club, Bangalore

Toit can argue that it’s the most popular microbrewery in Bangalore. But nothing can change the fact that it was established only after ‘The Biere Club’ started the whole craft beer revolution in the city in 2010. TBC is the perfect amalgamation of traditional and modern. This microbrewery still continues to brew the most traditional stouts, ales, and lagers, but they ensure that they have another rotational menu on the side that serves some of the wackiest beers on tap. Oh, they have beer cocktails too!

Doolally, Pune

Let us craft beer enthusiasts take a moment to thank two enterprising IIM graduates who identified that the concept of craft beers would fly in India. And boy, 8 years later, look what their vision has led to! Doolally in Pune (officially renamed as ‘The 1st Brewhouse’) was the first microbrewery in the country, and while it didn’t really spark more brewpubs in the city as it should’ve, it led to a revolution across India’s metros. We have more than 100 brewpubs in India today. Coming back to Doolally, if you haven’t heard of its Apple Cider, you’re living under a rock. Visit the Pune outlet purely for the part Doolally played in bringing the microbrewery trend in India to life.

Price: INR 220 for a pint

7 Degrees Brauhaus, Gurgaon

Brauhaus stands for ‘Beer House’ in German, and they’re authentic enough to have furniture made out of wood imported from Germany. That’s some pretty intricate detailing for a pub that was established to specialize in Bavarian beer. What’s more, they have Bavarian-style sausages to go with their deliciously brewed German stouts. While 7 Degrees has really set itself apart from other brewpubs in NCR with its Bavarian theme, what really makes this place worth a visit is its wonderfully alluring ambience that transports you to a different world altogether.

Price: INR 355 for a pint

The Barking Deer Brewpub, Mumbai

Surprisingly, Mumbai was one of last to be bitten by the craft beer bug. It finally happened in 2013 with The Barking Deer, a brewpub that is today most popular for its Bombay Blonde Ale and its whimsical-sounding Flying Pig Belgian Wit. The Barking Deer is surrounded by a whole new crop of bars and pubs in the most happening part of the city, but it maintains its sanctity as the first microbrewery in the city.
