Last year, the Swedish whisky distillery Mackmyra released a limited-edition single malt under the label ‘Intelligens’. The twenty-year old distillery, which holds a reputation for its award-winning whiskys, went a step ahead in innovation by having AI create the recipe of this unique blend.
A first of its kind whisky, Mackmyra collaborated with the Finnish technology firm Fourkind to create its newest single malt with the help of Microsoft Azure. The distillery provided Fourkind with 75 whisky recipes along with customer feedback, reviews, ratings, medals, evaluations and ratings of its past whisky releases. With the help of this data, Fourkind built an AI model that studies the information to suggest new recipes with a high-success probability.
The AI model generated over 70 million whisky recipes from the data input, from which the top 30 recipes were sampled. Under the mentorship of Mackmyra’s master blender Angela D’Orazio, the recipe of ‘Intelligens’ was selected to be the first whisky to be ever created by Artificial Intelligence!
The spirit packs strong notes of oak, citrus, vanilla and cigar, with an aroma of fruits, herbs and toffee. It is bottled at 46.1% ABV and is priced at £59.90. A bottle of the whisky can be purchased from Mackmyra’s British online shop.
