The first meadery in Asia and the only one in India, Moonshine Meadery brings you a new range of alcoholic beverage – the Mead. Founded by Rohan Rehani and Nitin Vishwas, we were lucky to taste mead cocktails with Mr. Rehani at the Andheri outlet of Woodside Inn on a pleasant Friday evening.
If you don’t know what Mead is, here is a little information:
Mead is the oldest fermented beverage known to mankind, produced by fermenting honey with different fruits and spices. The alcoholic beverage was a popular drink among the Vikings, and has been mentioned in old Indian, Greek and Roman scriptures, along with fantasy movies and shows like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones.
At Woodside Inn, Mr. Rehani was sitting at the bar, chatting with his team when we arrived. A short while later, we approached him to introduce ourselves and enquire about the mead cocktails. He was more than kind enough to oblige.
There were 5 Mead Cocktails on the menu, researched, explored and experimented by the team of Moonshine Meadery. We chose to try three of the five cocktails, as recommended by Abhisek from their team.
Smoked Mead Old Fashioned
This delicious cocktail uses mead as a modifier to give a honey-sweet flavour to our classic Old Fashioned. The smokey flavour and sweet aftertaste complemented the taste of whiskey really well.
Coffee Mead Martini
One sip and we were ready to order more of it! This cocktail uses mead as a sweetener, and has an extremely addictive taste which the attendees of the event would attest to. A must-try for all coffee lovers who like their beverage sweet, the Coffee Mead Martini truly won us over.
Mead Sangria
Next, we had the pleasure of tasting the Mead Sangria – a fruity and refreshing drink that uses Mead as its base spirit. Why didn’t we think of this combination before?
When we noticed there was a mead available on tap – Coffee Vanilla Mead, we knew we had to try it. And it turned out to be great! The aroma, taste, and aftertaste were to die for. The first sip had a sweet-coffee taste to it and the aftertaste had strong notes of vanilla. Now we know why Mead is called ‘the drink of the gods’.
The best part? A pint of mead is bottled at 6.5% ABV, which is much higher than what a pint of beer is produced at. You can find meads at selective alcohol outlets in Mumbai and Goa, click here to see one that is nearest to you.
Currently, Moonshine Meadery has three all-year-round meads – Traditional Mead, Coffee Mead and Apple Cyder Mead, along with seasonal meads that come and go. Watch out for their Christmas-themed mead coming soon!
