The Dora Sarchese Winery’s Wine Fountain

The wine fountain, called ‘Fontana Del Vino’ in Italy was conceptualized by the owner of Dora Sarchese Vineyards, Nicola D’Auria, and architect Rocco Antonini and opened in 2016. The fountain has been placed along a popular pilgrimage route called the ‘Cammino di San Tommaso’, connecting Rome to Ortona. This is an important pilgrimage as thousands of Catholics use the route to see the remains of Thomas, one of Jesus’ disciples.

The Vineyard Owners state there is no publicity gimmick or catch to the wine fountain – it is simply what it is being called. In fact, Dora Sarchese Winery’s wine fountain offers a taste of refreshing wine to weary pilgrims on the Way of St. Thomas. The fountain is also not for ill-behaving drunkards, but instead for devout pilgrims and common people.

Wine-Serving Tradition

This tradition of serving wine to weary pilgrims is indeed a noble initiative to keep them invigorated through the long pilgrim routes in Italy. These wine fountains allow them to halt for a break, relish some wine, and resume their spiritual journey.

There is one more famous fountain in Marino where white wine flows from the public fountain taps for an hour during the city’s annual Grape Festival. These fountains hold special significance for Italians during holidays and spiritual pilgrimages.

When Does It Operate?

The fountain was operating only during special events and festivals, however, it has started pouring non-stop now. The fountain has been made open for the public, pouring wine all day, every day. You just need your wine glass, and with just a press of a button, you’ll be served some top-notch Montepulciano d’Abruzzo wine.

While it is certainly a first for Italy, there have been multiple wine fountains across Europe. A similar ‘wine fountain’ concept exists at Bodegas Irache, a winery in Navarra, Spain, which inspired Abruzzo’s creation.
