One of the best things about South Mumbai bars is how effortlessly it lets you travel back in time. Between the art deco buildings, old Irani cafés, vintage bars, and streets filled with history, there is a certain charm here that modern nightlife spaces simply cannot recreate. Cafe New York fits perfectly into that atmosphere.
Originally established in 1913 as an Iranian restaurant before eventually evolving into the bar and café it is today, Cafe New York feels like one of those rare places that has managed to hold onto its old-world identity while remaining relevant. The moment you walk in, the space immediately feels different from the polished cocktail bars and overly curated cafés dominating Mumbai right now.

One of the first things that immediately stood out was the classic Irani café setup. Even the menu sitting underneath the glass tabletop instantly adds to the nostalgia. It is a tiny detail, but somehow it completely changes the experience because it reminds you that this place existed long before modern cafes and QR-coded menus became trendy.
Instead of loud nightlife energy, Cafe New York offers the kind of environment where people settle in for long conversations, slow drinks, and evenings that stretch far beyond what they originally planned. You will see regulars who have probably been coming here for years sitting alongside younger visitors discovering the place for the first time. That mix gives the bar a genuinely lived-in personality rather than making it feel curated purely for social media.

We started with a draft beer, which honestly felt like the perfect fit for the setting. Nothing overly fancy or experimental, just a simple beer that matched the easygoing atmosphere of the place. Alongside that, we ordered the Veg Stir Fry, which turned out to be surprisingly comforting and well-balanced.
One of the standout moments of the evening was easily the fresh pineapple juice with ice. Cafe New York is known for its fruit juices, and after trying one, it becomes immediately clear why. The freshness genuinely stands out, especially in a city where many places rely heavily on syrups and concentrates instead of actual fruit.
Perhaps the most memorable part of the evening was witnessing a fully functioning jukebox for the first time. It is not every day you walk into a bar in Mumbai and find regulars casually teaching people how to operate a jukebox filled with classic rock tunes. That small interaction somehow captured the spirit of Cafe New York perfectly. The place does not feel transactional like many modern bars, where people simply arrive, drink, and leave. Instead, there is a strong sense of community and familiarity that naturally develops inside the space.
As songs started playing through the jukebox, the entire atmosphere shifted slightly. The bar suddenly felt even more timeless, almost like stepping into a completely different era of Bombay nightlife that still somehow survives quietly inside South Mumbai.

Cafe New York also has a separate section called NY Bar & Grill, which brings a very different energy compared to the café side. While the original café space leans heavily into Irani nostalgia and old-school comfort, NY Bar & Grill channels a much more classic Manhattan-inspired bar aesthetic.
The interiors feature rich wooden finishes, framed old Hollywood photographs, vintage-inspired portraits, and moodier lighting that immediately gives the space a more polished drinking atmosphere. It still feels old-school, but in a very different way.
We ordered the Onion Rings here, which are fried in beer batter and pair perfectly with drinks. Crisp, light, and properly crunchy, they felt like the kind of uncomplicated bar snack that works best in places like this.

What makes Cafe New York stand out is not luxury, loud nightlife, or experimental cocktails. In fact, the place works precisely because it avoids trying to become any of those things.
The experience feels personal, relaxed, and incredibly rooted in South Bombay culture. It is the kind of spot where a quick coffee can easily turn into a three-hour catch-up session, or where one drink casually becomes an entire evening.
Very few places in Mumbai still manage to preserve that old café-and-bar culture without turning it into a gimmick. Cafe New York somehow balances nostalgia and functionality naturally without making the experience feel performative.
