Nothing attracts unsobered like good drinks. So, we traveled all the way to Kolkata from Mumbai to look for some banger bars serving lit cocktails and immaculate vibes. One of the places we visited to review as part of our Drink & Dish series was Conversation Room in Chowringhee. It has been featured on the 30 Best Bars in 2025, and we wanted to see if it was worth all the hype. Here is our unfiltered experience at this phenomenal space.

Tucked in a creaky, 100-year-old building, Conversation Room is inspired by an old, eponymous European concept wherein polymaths from fields like politics, music, philosophy, and art gathered together to discuss important issues over food and drink. Continuing this theme, the bar also frequently hosts lectures and discussions on important issues like the politics of menstrual blood, the partition of India, and more.
The ambiance of the bar is quite moody and romantic. It could easily work as a date spot for intellectuals. Not only would it be romantic in the dim light, but the discussions would also enlighten you about your date’s values and whether they match.
The interiors, too, had quite the personality. The walls were adorned with quirky posters rife with pop culture references, making them feel like an inside joke. What we especially liked about this place was that the music was not very loud. We were actually able to hear other people while talking, which was refreshing. We were very impressed by the ambiance, so let’s see how good their food and drinks were!

We started out with their signature cocktails, That’s What She Said priced at INR 995 and The Smoke Signal priced at INR 855. That’s What She Said felt like the best blend of a spicy cocktail and a tropical cocktail. It’s almost like a peachy picante. The Smoke Signal, too, was phenomenal, with its titular smoky flavor and rich, bittersweet notes! Both get a strong 9/10 from us!
Then, we were quite hungry, so we decided to try their Mutton Pepper Fry, priced at INR 665, with parotta. It was very peppery, spicy, and delicious. It left us utterly despondent, as there isn’t such a place in Mumbai!
The drinks that we had are a part of the new cocktail menu that was launched recently at the bar. This is the third iteration of their cocktail menu. So, if you’ve been here before, but a long time ago, chances are that you might not have had the drinks available now.
What is more, ardent admirers of this establishment might also be pleasantly surprised to know that they have merch. You can get quirky caps, tees, totes, and bag tags.
