Glocal Junction

The name suggests Glocal Junction thinks it is a mélange of global and local tastes. But visit it on a Friday night, and you will clearly see that what it actually resembles, is a painstakingly overcrowded central line local train. #Mumbai

My suburban pet peeve No. 341: TOO MANY PEOPLE

Suburbs have so many pubs and bars but they are all invariably SO crowded. I mean, how many people even live there? My visit to yet another bar in the ‘burbs is what brought about this particular rant.

One Friday night, we went to a place called Glocal. Well to explain what it is, if Colaba Social was a Hollywood superhit film, Glocal is its Bollywood rip-off.llu

We arrived post 10 PM to find 879 people queuing up outside. True story. My friends all but gave up when, I made a call, obviously, and we walked right in past all those sorry faces and the looks they gave us.

But the feeling of superiority didn’t last long. With another enormous crowd ‘chilling’ indoors, the inside was no better. Asking for a table earned us an evil, sadistic laugh from the waiter. So we were forced to settle at the bar.

The drinks were good, well they better be if you were going to force people to drink them standing. Gotta give them something to numb the pain and irritation, I guess.

The food was pretty fab too. We would have called for a lot from the menu (and off it; that’s where the good stuff is at. I wouldn’t expect the burbies to know that though) had we not been ‘hanging at the bar’. Beats me why ‘burbies think that’s cool. It’s not. A table. A table is definitely cooler.

This place was another one of those suburban phenomena where sit-down pubs turn into nightclubs past a certain hour or the moment the DJ plays a popular song.

So you can imagine what happened the moment ‘Sorry’ played. All those bodies that were up till now jostling for space, suddenly started gyrating as if they were one of the bootylicious chicas from Bieber’s video. Honestly.

To be honest, the music was good, so for an hour or so I pretended to be ‘one of them’ and tried dancing along. But soon enough, I found that I was trying to extricate myself from the throng and heading for the door.

I’d had enough.

We townies may be snooty and not every one’s cup of tea but, we do believe in personal space.
