How Drinking Changed My Life

As a twenty-something, who is fucking clueless about what’s happening to her life, I have a confession to make. I have attended multiple self awareness classes, motivational speech sessions and nothing ever made a two rupee change in my life. What brought about a real transformation was alcohol. Yes, I said it. I may be a horrible person now, but know that I was way worse.

I finally have friends: As an excellent mixture of a sad loner and a sassy bitch, it was very very hard for me to make friends and even harder to keep them. Alcohol, however changed this. It either brings them down to my level or elevates me to a zone where I have no damns to give. Good for me, I owe all my friends to booze.

I realised the importance of having aspirations: When I started off with Kingfisher, the dream was to drink cans of Stella. When I moved on to Old Monk, I hoped for a bright future where there’s unlimited Jack Daniel’s. Daaru taught me to be ambitious.

It taught me the value of money: Let’s admit it, all of us are a little spoilt from the inside. You don’t take the change back from the rickshaw dude, we don’t care if we drop a 5 rupee coin. But, then you discover the glory of drinking and all of a sudden – voila, twenty 5 rupee coins can get me a pint, let’s save the change.

It made me a little adventurous: I am not a Khatron Ke Khilaadi. I may pretend like I am but honestly I am a fattu. Alcohol makes me a little braver. Maybe it’s purely psychological, but if there’s something that I am petrified to do, I just get really tipsy and do it. It’s a source of courage and love.

You have a friend for life: The world is a shit hole and you are never ready for it. But alcohol gives me the comfort of having a lifelong solace. People come and go, but booze is there forever.
