Women tennis players are some of the most flamboyant and entertaining athletes in the world. At Unsobered, it’s not new for us to equate well known people with different kinds of alcohol, just for kicks, of course. I’ve chosen some of the most renowned women tennis players and equated them with popular cocktails served around the world.
Serena Williams – Screwdriver
It is only apt for someone as strong as Serena Williams to be equated with a cocktail that sounds as powerful as her forehand smashes. Williams is, by far, the screwdriver of women’s tennis, potent enough to overpower some of her male counterparts as well.
Primary ingredients: Vodka and Orange Juice
Maria Sharapova – Bloody Mary
Maria Sharapova was known to be brutal in her day, but unfortunately, she is one of the most inconsistent players in women’s tennis now, much like how Bloody Mary is the most inconsistently served cocktail across Mumbai’s bars. Maria Sharapova is the Bloody Mary of women’s tennis, bloody good, but bloody unpredictable.
Primary ingredients: Vodka and Tomato Juice
Sania Mirza – Cosmopolitan
Sania Mirza proves that she is at ease adjusting to different cultures around the world. Born in Mumbai to Hyderabadi parents, education from Chennai, a husband from Pakistan, and a track record of pairing up with players from many different countries around the world makes her the ‘Cosmopolitan’ of women’s tennis.
Primary ingredients: Vodka, Triple Sec, Cranberry Juice
Martina Hingis – Martini
Obvious similarities with the name of the drink aside, Martina Hingis has achieved cult status, much like the ever so relevant Martini. Still extremely fit and notching up doubles titles even today, Hingis has been around forever. The Martini and Hingis will remain winners forever in their respective domains.
Primary ingredients: Gin, Vermouth, Lemon Juice
Martina Navratilova – Old Fashioned
This one is a no-brainer. Martina Navratilova, considered one of the greatest women tennis players in history, is a regular when it comes to attending grand slams. But her appearance today is as quintessentially old-fashioned as it was during her hay days. She is arguably the best ambassador of women’s tennis from the bygone era, much like how the Old Fashioned cocktail is the best ambassador for cocktails from the 18th century.
Primary Ingredients: Bourbon/ Rye Whiskey and Citrus Juice
