You could be a youngster with an ‘old soul’ or you could just actually be an uncle/aunty (in which case, pranaam) but we all know that we’ve all felt outdated at some point in our lives. You might be the most in-the-know when it comes to internet lingo but you’re still going to some day say, ‘Is this what the kids call it now? In our day…’ But let’s be honest, no one likes a nostalgic Mehta uncle-type, so let’s get you brushed up on all the drinking slang there is so you can bust it out at the next party.
Lit: This frequently used term is supposed to denote a good time – almost always resulting in a wild night. Remember when Sharma ji k/a beta had one too many and did the naagin dance on your sister’s reception party? That’s lit. You know that song that always has your entire group singing along and getting emotional drunk? That’s lit too.
Pre-gaming: Dekho, we know that the kitty party aunty in you wants to have mimosas in a cabana, but not everyone is as affluent as you are. The youth wants to get drunk for as cheap as possible before they head out for a night/day on the town. Pre-gaming is basically getting cheap liquor from a theka to get tipsy so that you pay less at these unreasonable bars. Much like how you go to your regular subziwalla to get onions for 2 rupees less than other subziwallas, and then head to an actual grocery store to buy fancy shit like kiwis.
Buying a round: I’m pretty sure you’re all too familiar with everyone pouncing at the bill after a family dinner and then the tug of war that ensues. There’s a lot of ‘nai nai’, ‘iss baar hum denge, agli baar aap’and the server is left standing there dumbfounded. When you’re going out drinking, you can avoid all that embarrassment by already proclaiming that the first drink for everyone in your group will be sponsored by you. ‘First/next round’s on me’ or ‘I’ll take care of this round’ are instances of acceptable usage.
TGIF (Thank God It’s Friday): Imagine a job with no set working hours, and working into the next day almost every day of the week – it’s understandable why the young ones are so grateful for alcohol when the weekend rolls in. TGIF is just a way of saying how grateful they are for weekend drinking scenes, and it’s sanskaari too! So the next time you see some kiddo go #TGIF on a party picture, don’t forget to smash that like button (and maybe even post a Friday night picture of your own). They (and you, of course) deserve it.
Drunch: This one will definitely be your favourite. Imagine – brunch but with unlimited daaru! Sundays aren’t just to chill at home with your family anymore.
