You must have seen distilleries and alco-bev brands coming up with unique, attractive bottle shapes and sizes to attract customers. But Rhea Distilleries thought of coming up with something very different. This Goa-based spirits producer launched India’s first paper bottle packaging. Yes, you read that right. It has introduced a paper bottle for its Fidalgo Premium Cashew Feni. Here’s everything you must know about this new launch.
Rhea Distilleries has marked a shift in the domestic alco-bev industry by introducing paper bottles. This shift is towards sustainable packaging, which rules out the traditional glass bottle packaging.
These Frugal bottles have been introduced in collaboration with ITC’s packaging and printing business and UK packaging company Frugalpac. They are the world’s first commercially available paper bottles made for wines and spirits. Developed by Ipswich-based Frugalpac, these bottles are created using 94% recycled paperboard with a food-grade liner.
The outer design of the bottle has Goan elements on it, with the packaging showing cashew feni’s regional identity. These bottles are approximately five times lighter than the traditionally used glass bottles and have a six times lower carbon footprint.
Even though the spirit is introduced in a paper bottle, it retains its original production process. Cashew feni holds a GI tag (geographical indicator), and this feni is sourced from a single farm in Goa. It is made using hand-picked cashews, which go through the process of crushing and fermenting. They are later triple-distilled, and hence the spirit has a nice fruity and earthy profile.
It is designed to reduce carbon emissions. These bottles are easier to recycle because the components are separable. The paper shell can be easily separated from the liner when you have to dispose of it.
This bottle is currently launched in the Goan markets with a distillery in Goa. It is all set to bring in new standards of sustainable packaging in the alcohol beverage industry. The launch marks a potential shift as more and more companies are looking towards exploring alternatives to the traditional glass bottles. This is in response to the growing sustainability considerations.
