The Five Stages Of Coming To Terms With A Dry Day

A dry day isn’t really a dry day if it doesn’t leave you devastated and crying in front of your empty fridge. The day could arrive with a fair warning but of course, you waited till the last minute to head to the liquor store and the entire city had the same idea. But hang in there, we’re going to help you through this horrible time. Here are the five stages you will experience when trying to come to terms with the dry day.

Denial: Yes, we know, it’s hard to accept that you won’t be getting any liquor today. You won’t feel the cold glass in your palms and feel the familiar burn of alcohol going down your throat. Moody outbursts will ensue and maybe even screaming ‘This can’t be happening!’ occasionally, but that’s okay, it’s all part of the process. Remember, the world isn’t conspiring against you, it truly is a dry day.

Anger: Good, now you’re at the second stage. Please stop punching the wall and listen… you will get angry and blame everyone for the position you are in now. Your friends will seem like the enemy, After all, they were the ones who didn’t remind you about the dry day, so obviously, it’s all their fault. You will snap at people for no reason and be in a foul mood but you will get through this.

Bargaining: You’re in a vulnerable place right now and that means you will try finding any way to get by. This involves a series of ‘if onlys’ – ‘If only I’d gotten to the store in time’, ‘If only that freeloading friend hadn’t come over for drinks the day before’, ‘If only Chintu in 8th grade hadn’t introduced me to beer’. But this is just wishful thinking, and what’s done is done. You cannot bargain your way out of this situation, we’re sorry.

Sadness: Obviously, there is a lot of sadness involved with any sense of loss. 24 hours of not seeing your beloved Kingfisher Ultra and not hearing the clinking of glasses may seem like an eternity. You’re probably bawling your eyes out while reading this, and that’s alright. Just let it out, we’re almost there and you’re going to be just fine.

Acceptance: After all the drama, this is the point in the day where you start realising that this is just a dry day, not a dry year. Yes, today you might not be able to kick back and have a cold one but tomorrow will be a new day! You’re going to be able to stock up for not just tomorrow but for dry days to come. Maybe you’re also starting to realise that being liquor-less isn’t as horrible as you thought it’d be. If so, congratulations! You’ve just come to terms with a dry day!
