Buying Champagne for the first time can be slightly confusing. There are famous names everywhere, prices can jump from a few thousand rupees to well over INR 30,000, and then there are labels saying Brut, Blanc de Blancs, Rosé and Vintage. What do you actually pick?
For a first bottle in India, the easiest approach is not to chase the most expensive name. Start with a Champagne that is relatively approachable, understand whether you prefer something crisp or fuller-bodied, and then move on from there. Also, one important point before we start: real Champagne comes from France's Champagne region. Indian sparkling wines such as Chandon Brut are excellent alternatives, but they are not Champagne. Here are seven bottles and styles worth knowing in 2026.
If someone says, "I have never had Champagne before, what should I buy?", Moët & Chandon Brut Impérial is probably the easiest answer.
It is a non-vintage Brut, meaning it is made by blending wines from different harvests to maintain the house's familiar style. Moët says Brut Impérial brings together wines from nearly 280 crus, along with different grape varieties and harvests.

The style is fresh and fruit-forward, with citrus and orchard-fruit character alongside the toasty notes you expect from Champagne. It isn't aggressively dry or overly heavy, which makes it a fairly easy introduction.
Approx 2026 price: INR 7,000-9,700 for 750ml, depending heavily on the state. A current Delhi listing shows INR 7,010, while Mumbai is around INR 9,703.
If Moët feels a little too light, try Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut. This is a fuller, more structured style, with ripe fruit, citrus, pastry and toasted notes. The familiar yellow label also makes it one of the easiest premium Champagne bottles to recognize.
The Champagne Bureau describes Pinot Noir as bringing body and structure to Champagne, while Chardonnay contributes freshness and citrus character.
That makes Veuve a good option if you're drinking Champagne with food rather than just having it as an aperitif.
Approx 2026 price: Around INR 7,000 in Gurgaon, while other cities can be considerably more expensive.

For beginners who prefer lighter, citrusy wines, Taittinger Brut Réserve is worth knowing. Taittinger is particularly associated with a relatively Chardonnay-led style. That usually means more freshness and floral and citrus notes rather than a very powerful, heavy profile.
This is where understanding grape varieties actually helps. Champagne can be made from several grapes, but Chardonnay tends to bring freshness, minerality and citrus, while Pinot Noir contributes body and structure.
Approx 2026 price: Around INR 6,500 in Delhi, with Mumbai and Bengaluru listings higher.

Laurent-Perrier La Cuvée is another good starting point, particularly if you want something elegant rather than heavy. It is a non-vintage Brut with a Chardonnay-forward profile, making it a natural choice before dinner. The Champagne Bureau itself recommends non-vintage Brut or Blanc de Blancs for pre-dinner drinking.
You can serve it with salted snacks, nuts, olives and cheese without making the pairing unnecessarily complicated.
Approx 2026 price: Around INR 6,800 in Delhi, INR 7,700 in Mumbai and approximately INR 8,000 in Bengaluru based on current 2026 listings.
Ruinart Blanc de Blancs is made exclusively from white grapes, principally Chardonnay. That is exactly what the term Blanc de Blancs means. Expect citrus, white flowers, mineral notes and a lighter, elegant feel. As the wine matures, Champagne's characteristic brioche, biscuit and toasted flavors can become more noticeable.
It is not the cheapest bottle for a beginner, but if you already enjoy Chardonnay or crisp white wines, this is a useful style to explore.
Approx 2026 price: Around INR 11,200 in Delhi, INR 12,800 in Mumbai and INR 13,400 in Bengaluru.

Bollinger Special Cuvée is for the person who has tried lighter Champagnes and now wants something with more weight. Blanc de Noirs Champagne, for example, is made entirely from black grapes such as Pinot Noir and Meunier and generally has more body and structure.
Bollinger's house style is well suited to food and tends to feel more substantial than some of the lighter, Chardonnay-led options.
Approx 2026 price: Around INR 9,200 in Delhi, with Mumbai prices typically higher.
Now, technically, this one isn't Champagne. But if you are simply looking for a good sparkling wine for your first celebration without spending INR 7,000-plus, Chandon Brut makes far more sense.
Chandon Brut is made in India and is a sparkling wine, not Champagne. Current 2026 listings put the 750ml bottle at roughly INR 1,500-2,800 depending on the state. A current Goa listing, for example, shows INR 2,600, while Delhi is listed around INR 2,780 by Livcheers. It offers a dry, fresh style with fruit and citrus character and is a much easier entry point for someone who wants to understand sparkling wine before spending on Champagne.

If you want the classic Champagne experience, start with Moët & Chandon Brut Impérial. If you like richer wines, go for Veuve Clicquot or Bollinger. Prefer crisp, lighter wines? Taittinger or Ruinart Blanc de Blancs should be on your radar.
And if the Champagne prices are making you rethink the whole plan, buy Chandon Brut. It isn't Champagne, but it gives you a good introduction to premium sparkling wine without the same price tag.
One last thing: Don't stress about your first bottle of champagne, its just drink, it doesn't have to be this complicated. If this article helped you great, or else just go with the flow and buy or try one that piques your curiosity, cheers!
