Thailand is known for its beaches, night markets, rooftop bars, and lively nightlife, making it an easy destination for Indian travelers who enjoy a drink. From Bangkok’s lively bar culture to the famous Full Moon parties, alcohol is very much part of Thailand’s nightlife. The legal drinking age in Thailand is 20 years. This applies to both Thai citizens and foreign tourists. If you’re under 20 years of age, you are legally not allowed to purchase or consume alcohol in Thailand.
If you're travelling with a group and someone is under 20, don't assume that being accompanied by older friends or family members changes the rule. Bars, restaurants and retailers can ask for identification before selling alcohol.
For Indian travelers, carrying your passport or another accepted form of identification is therefore a good idea, particularly if you're planning to visit bars or nightlife venues.
Thailand has introduced eight new rules governing the sale and consumption of alcohol. The updated rules came into immediate effect starting May 2026 after the government officially published them in the Royal Gazette.
These rules are applicable in public areas, transportation facilities, and government agencies.
According to the authorities, these revisions have been made to better reflect current circumstances and public use of common places. The main goals of these revisions are modernizing antiquated legislation, enhancing public order, increasing safety in transportation hubs, and enforcing more stringent controls over public use. These revisions reinforce regulations first implemented in 2008.
Thailand has prohibited the sale of alcoholic beverages on roads, on vehicles, or in vehicles located on a road. The prohibition also applies to train stations and on trains. However, there will be an exception for special events held inside the air-conditioned halls of Bangkok Station.
Moreover, there is a prohibition on the sale and consumption of alcohol at public passenger piers, public parks owned by state or other government agencies. and ferry terminals, and all passenger transport stations nationwide. Prohibition also applies within factory premises, except at liquor production plants.

No. One of the most important things for tourists to understand is that Thailand has restrictions on drinking in certain public places.
While Thailand’s nightlife is fun, liberal, and enjoyable generally, that shouldn’t give tourists the leverage to consume alcohol anywhere they want.
Alcohol sales and consumption are restricted in places including temples, government offices, petrol stations, public parks, and public transport areas, unless specifically permitted under applicable rules.
The safest approach is to consume alcohol inside a licensed bar, restaurant, hotel, or a venue where drinking is clearly permitted.
There are a few beaches in Thailand where drinking is permitted; however, that does not mean that drinking is permitted on all beaches.
Thailand's rules can restrict alcohol consumption in public places, and individual beaches, parks, municipalities, and event areas can have additional restrictions. Even where you see other people drinking, that does not necessarily mean that consumption is officially permitted.
If you’re at a beach club or licensed beachfront restaurant, follow the venue’s rules. If you're sitting on a public beach, check local signage and restrictions before cracking open a bottle.

This is one rule Indian travelers should take particularly seriously: don’t drink and drive in Thailand – or anywhere in general.
Thai authorities mostly use breathalyzers to determine alcohol levels in drivers. Current Thai government guidance notes a general blood-alcohol threshold of 50 mg per 100 ml, while a lower threshold of 20 mg per 100 ml applies to drivers under 20 years of age.
The easiest way to avoid legal and safety problems is not to drive after drinking at all. This is especially relevant in places such as Phuket, Koh Samui and Pattaya, where tourists commonly rent scooters or motorcycles. Having a drink before getting on a rented scooter can put you at risk of both an accident and legal consequences.
