Dry Days In Goa: Which Areas Will Be Affected?

The government of Goa has announced that December 19, 20, and 22 will be observed as ‘dry days’ in some areas in Goa. This is in the backdrop of the Zilla Parishad elections taking place throughout North and South Goa.

Goa will implement a ‘dry day’ in the following villages and Zilla Panchayat areas: Anjuna, Vagator, Baga, Candolim, Calangute, Morjim, Mandrem, Ashwem, Palolem, Agonda, and Patnem.

Almost all clubs in these areas will remain closed to the public on these dates. The state government has also prohibited loud music after 10 PM. Most importantly, liquor sales will be prohibited on December 19, 20, and 22 in these areas.

Will December 21 Be A Dry Day Too?

While December 19, 20, and 22 will be dry days in some parts of Goa. However, December 21, Sunday, will not be a dry day. On this day, liquor sales will go on as usual all across the state.

Also note that December 22 will not be a ‘full’ dry day. It will be a partial dry day, with liquor sales restrictions in place only till 6 PM.

Which Areas In Goa Will Be Exempt From ‘Dry Day’?

Popular tourist hotspots such as Anjuna, Vagator, Candolim, and Baga will be facing a ‘dry day’ on December 19, 20, and 22 against the backdrop of the Zilla Parishad elections. However, other municipal areas such as Panaji, Margao, and Vasco will be exempted from the ‘dry day’ rules and regulations.

Hotel bars and licensed venues operate as per local jurisdiction and excise policies. Kindly check with the venue for local updates.

What Are Dry Days And Why Are They Observed?

Dry days are certain days and dates when liquor sales are prohibited in certain states, districts, or regions. They are observed on days and events that hold religious, cultural, or socio-political importance. Dry days are observed to uphold socio-cultural values, respect religious tolerance, and prevent public nuisance. Declaring dry days on these events helps maintain law and order, especially on days with significant national or religious importance.

Even though liquor sales are prohibited on these days, private consumption is permitted. Moreover, states like Gujarat, Nagaland, Bihar, Mizoram, and Lakshadweep have been declared ‘dry states’ altogether. The sale of alcohol is completely prohibited in these states.
