If you've spent enough time in Thane, you've probably heard someone say, "If you haven't been to Panchali, have you even been to Thane?" Naturally, we had to find out what all the hype was about. From the outside, Panchali Bar & Restaurant looks like a fairly ordinary neighborhood bar. Nothing about it screams destination. But after spending an evening here, we realized there's a lot more to this place than first meets the eye.
Good seafood, cold beer, and an old-school charm have helped Panchali build a loyal following over the years. It may not have flashy interiors or trendy cocktails, but sometimes that's exactly what makes a place memorable.

Walking in, Panchali feels like your typical local bar. The seating near the entrance is fairly compact, and you might assume that's all there is. Then we accidentally discovered something unexpected.
Behind the kitchen is a much larger seating section that most first-time visitors probably don't know exists. Judging by the crowd, this seemed to be where many of the regulars preferred to sit. It almost felt like discovering a hidden room that only locals knew about, adding a little personality to the overall experience.

For the evening, we kept things fairly simple. A chilled Hoegaarden paired with fresh Surmai, although Pomfret is another great option if that's what catches your eye that day. We also ordered Paneer Crispy and Kanda Bhaji to round out the meal. It turned out to be a combination that worked surprisingly well, although one dish clearly stole the show.
One thing we appreciated immediately was how seriously Panchali takes its seafood. Before the fish even made it to the kitchen, the waiter brought the fresh Surmai to our table for us to inspect. It's a small gesture, but it instantly builds confidence in what you're about to eat.
The Surmai was easily the highlight of the meal. It arrived with a beautifully crisp exterior while remaining soft and flaky inside. Every bite tasted fresh, and the seasoning let the fish do most of the talking. The garlic fries served alongside turned out to be the perfect companion, adding just enough flavor without taking attention away from the fish. If Surmai isn't available, Pomfret would probably be our next choice.
We also ended up learning something we genuinely didn't know. Apparently, Hoegaarden cans come with their own little pouring instructions printed right on them. It's one of those tiny details you can easily miss, but once you notice it, you can't help but appreciate the thought behind it. It even sparked a conversation at the table about whether we'd been pouring our Hoegaarden incorrectly all this time.

The Kanda Bhaji was exactly what you'd hope for. Crispy, comforting, and perfect alongside a cold beer. It's one of those dishes that's hard to get wrong, and Panchali does a solid job with it. The Paneer Crispy, however, was decent without being particularly memorable. There wasn't anything wrong with it, but after having the Surmai, it simply couldn't compete. If you're visiting for the first time, we'd easily recommend putting your focus on the seafood instead.

Panchali Bar & Restaurant isn't trying to reinvent the neighborhood bar. Instead, it sticks to what it knows best: serving fresh seafood, cold beer, and creating an atmosphere that keeps regulars coming back. From the hidden seating area tucked behind the kitchen to the fresh Surmai that completely stole the evening, there's an authenticity here that's difficult to fake.
If you find yourself in Thane, Panchali deserves a visit. Order the Surmai if it's available, or go for the Pomfret, grab a Hoegaarden, and don't forget to look for the hidden seating section. Chances are, that's where you'll find the regulars enjoying one of Thane's best-kept seafood secrets.
