Shankari Fishland Review: Fresh Seafood & Old-School Bar Vibes

Mumbai has no shortage of bars that try hard to look premium, but the places that usually stay memorable are often the ones that feel untouched by trends. Shankari Fishland falls directly into that category. The restaurant still carries the atmosphere of an old-school Mumbai seafood bar where the focus stays heavily on fresh food, affordable drinks, and regular customers who have probably been coming here for years.

Located along the Juhu Versova Link Road near Versova, Shankari Fishland does not feel polished or designed for social media. The venue is small, split between AC and non-AC seating, slightly crowded during peak hours, and filled with the kind of relaxed neighborhood-bar energy that has slowly started disappearing across Mumbai’s nightlife scene. But that rawness becomes part of the experience rather than a drawback.

The Food Still Does Most Of The Talking

The menu leans heavily toward seafood, Mughlai comfort food, and straightforward bar-style dishes rather than anything overly experimental. This time, the table included Pomfret Curry with steamed rice, Alu Palak, Alu Cheese, Fish Curry, and a Hoegaarden on the side.

The Pomfret Curry easily became the highlight of the meal. The fish tasted extremely fresh, the curry carried a strong coastal-style flavor without feeling too heavy, and the quantity honestly felt large enough for two people. Paired with steamed rice, it became one of those simple meals that work because the ingredients themselves feel fresh and well-cooked rather than overcomplicated.

The Fish Curry overall deserves special mention because seafood quality can often become inconsistent at older neighborhood bars, but Shankari still manages to maintain freshness surprisingly well. That consistency is probably one of the biggest reasons the place continues attracting loyal regulars.

The Alu Palak balanced the heavier seafood dishes nicely with softer, more comforting flavors, while the Alu Cheese leaned more into indulgent bar-food territory. None of the dishes tried to reinvent familiar recipes, and honestly, that works in the restaurant’s favor.

The Atmosphere Feels Like Old Mumbai

One of the biggest reasons Shankari works is that it still feels rooted in an older version of Mumbai nightlife. The place carries that unmistakable neighborhood-bar atmosphere where office-goers, local regulars, seafood lovers, and casual drinkers all comfortably overlap.

The interiors are simple, the lighting feels old-school, the service moves quickly, and there is very little interest in creating a luxury dining experience. Instead, the restaurant focuses entirely on generous portions, familiar food, cold beer, and fast-moving tables.

Is It Worth The Price?

For seafood in Mumbai, especially fresh fish, pricing can escalate quickly once you move into more polished restaurants or premium coastal dining spaces. Shankari still manages to stay relatively affordable compared to many newer seafood-focused restaurants across Andheri, Bandra, and Juhu.

The total bill came to around INR 2,097 for multiple dishes and drinks, which felt justified considering the portion sizes, fish quality, and overall experience. The Pomfret Curry alone felt generous enough to comfortably share.

The restaurant also works particularly well for people who prioritize food quality over ambience-heavy dining experiences.

Summing Up

Shankari Fishland is not trying to become Mumbai’s next luxury seafood destination, and that is exactly why the place continues working so well. The restaurant still feels grounded in old-school Mumbai bar culture, where fresh seafood, affordable drinks, generous portions, and familiar atmosphere mattered more than presentation or trend-driven dining.

If you are looking for polished interiors or experimental cocktails, this may not be the place, but if the goal is fresh seafood, comforting flavors, beer on the side, and a genuinely local Mumbai bar experience, Shankari Fishland delivers exactly that.
