What Is A Dry Day?

In India, several events, festivals, and occasions hold religious, cultural, or national significance. Festivals like Dussehra, Good Friday, Maha Shivratri, Holi, and more hold religious and cultural significance. Whereas, days like Gandhi Jayanti, Independence Day, and Republic Day hold national importance as they are important days rooted in our country’s history.

Even days when nationwide/state-specific/civic body elections take place, there can be dry days. For example, the Maharashtra Civic Body Elections dry days.

To honor the sanctity of these festivals and events, state governments and/or the central government prohibits the sale of alcohol in specific states/regions or across the entire country. The days on which alcohol sale is prohibited are called ‘dry days’. And do you know that there are states where the sale of alcohol is prohibited – blanket banned – entirely? These are called ‘dry states’ – Gujarat, Nagaland, and Bihar are some examples.

Why Is 26th January Observed As A Dry Day?

Each state/region can have its own set of dry days in a year. For example, Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti is a dry day observed in Delhi but not in Maharashtra/Mumbai. However, there are some days that are observed as dry days throughout India. These days hold national importance as they are rooted in the country’s history and the very foundation of India’s existence.

These days are:

  • Independence Day (August 15): The day India gained independence as a nation
  • Republic Day (January 26): The day the Indian Constitution came into effect and India became a republic state
  • Gandhi Jayanti (October 2): Birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation

On these days, sale of alcohol is completely prohibited throughout India. Liquor shops, hotel bars, and other establishments are shut on these three days.

Things To Keep In Mind During A Dry Day

  • Except for days of national importance, most dry days are not observed throughout the country. Each state/region has its own list of dry days. Check with the local authorities, state excise laws, and local liquor retailers/shop owners to get an idea of dry days in your state/region.
  • A dry day does not mean that you are prohibited from consuming or possessing alcohol within a private setting. Only public sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited.
  • Consider stocking up on alcohol before the dry day(s) to avoid last-minute inconvenience.
  • Local excise departments and law enforcement bodies can conduct surprise inspections at places like liquor shops, permit rooms, bars, and pubs on dry days to check for dry day violations. If licensed sellers/buyers are found violating dry day rules, they might face penalties and legal action.
