Bagpiper Whisky: Origin

Bagpiper Whisky actually originates from India and was launched in 1976 by United Distillers. This company was later acquired by United Spirits Ltd (USL), a Diageo subsidiary. They targeted the mass market as an affordable  Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL). It was developed during the post-Emergency liberalization.

This whisky leveraged on growing demand for whisky and increased disposable incomes. It is produced using a blend of 12% imported Scotch malt and 88% neutral molasses spirit. This created a faux-grain profile, which was matured in American oak casks.

The production of this whisky takes place across India at over 20 sites. The main distilleries are located in Bangalore (Kumbalgodu), Baramati, Hyderabad (Malkajgiri and Nacharam), Aurangabad, and Nask in Maharashtra. They also have contract units in Rajasthan, Odisha, and Goa.

Bagpiper Whisky: Taste Profile

Bagpiper Whisky is known for its approachable, bold Indian blended profile, which is dominated by molasses-neutral spirit base. It has a thick texture that ends up coating the palate very densely. When you smell it, you get the notes of oak spice, dried fruits, vanilla, and caramelized sugar.  These notes emerge with a slight artificial sweetness, which has permitted flavors and perfume.

The palate unfolds acidic yet smooth undertones like cinnamon, black pepper, mellow toffee, and malt. These undertones come from the Scotch malt maturation, which took place in American oak casks. This creates a balanced, slight warmth without any harsh burn.

Its finish lingers warmly with subtle fruitiness and woody sweetness. The slight raw edge gets easily shadowed when used in cocktails like Whiskey Sour.
