George Ballantine set up a grocery store in the Cowgate area of Edinburgh in 1827 after spending five years as an apprentice at a grocery store. Several years later, he turned to the art of ageing whiskies in 1836 and opened a new grocery store in South Bridge.
In 1881, Ballantine’s shops and warehouses began exporting blended whisky to a worldwide market. Though George Ballantine passed away a few years later, his sons took over the business and maintained his legacy.
