Carlsberg, the beloved global brewing company, is about to expand its footing in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Carlsberg and the Government of Maharashtra have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for an INR 500 crore investment! This momentous decision was taken at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2026 in Davos, Switzerland from January 19 to 23. What does this MoU outline and how will it affect Carlsberg’s influence in the country? Let’s take a look at all the details!
The Government of Maharashtra has signed an MoU with Danish brewing company Carlsberg. The globally-renowned brewing company has entered into a formal agreement to invest INR 500 crore in the state. The agreement was formalized in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister (CM) Devendra Fadnavis and Carlsberg CEO Jacob Aarup-Andersen. With this MoU, Carlsberg has expressed its long-term commitment to expanding its footprint in the country.
The MoU was signed under the Maharashtra Pavilion at the WEF. It outlines plans for a new brewery and related food & agro processing infrastructure in Maharashtra. The 500 crore deal will involve Carlsberg building a greenfield facility in Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra. For those unversed with the term, a greenfield project is an initiative built entirely from scratch on undeveloped land without the constraints of an existing structure or obstructions.

This investment is expected to generate direct and indirect jobs, enhancing local manufacturing and contributing to the economic growth of Maharashtra. Carlsberg has stated in the agreement that it would commit to responsible, sustainable growth in India, strengthen local production, support supply chains, and foster employment while “brewing for a better today and tomorrow”.
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis described the investment as part of Maharashtra’s broad vision to attract large-scale foreign investment, global capital, and promote industrial development. This engagement builds on Maharashtra’s active outreach at the WEF in Davos, where it has secured several MoUs across many sectors.
