The legendary Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist, renowned worldwide for his prowess as a wicketkeeper and batsman, has recently ventured into the spirits industry. Yes, you read that right! He recently launched a premium tequila brand called El Arquero. This move marks a significant career upgrade for Gilchrist, as he adds an entrepreneurial dimension to his profile after impressing people with his impeccable batting and wicket-keeping skills.
Cricketer Adam Gilchrist’s passion for tequila actually drove him to explore Mexico’s renowned agave-growing regions. Here’s where he developed a very strong appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into making authentic tequila.
El Arquero can easily be called the culmination of his dream. He launched this tequila brand in collaboration with his wife, Mel. It also includes other admired figures in the Australian drinks industry, like Eddie Brook (Cape Byron Distillery) and Dan Fitzgerald (Fourth Wave Wine).
The team actually partnered with the prestigious Destiladora de Los Altos distillery (NOM 1412) in Jalisco. It is operated by the Banuelos family, which is very well-known as the founders of the iconic Cazadores tequila.

Gilchrist introduced El Arquero by talking about its dedication to quality, authenticity, and transparency. This tequila is crafted from 100% Blue Weber agave, which is slow-cooked in traditional ovens, and is certified additive-free by the Additive Free Alliance.
The cricketer describes the product as a spirit that is traditionally distilled and clean, as it has no additives. This attention to purity is central to the brand and reflects its ambition to bring a spirit of genuine craftsmanship to the market.
El Arquero debuted with two core expressions: Blanco and Reposado. Both are tailored to highlight the agave’s natural flavors and exceptional smoothness. The Blanco features aromas of roasted pineapple, cooked agave, white pepper, and citrus, followed by lemon and creamy vanilla on the palate. Reposado is made using only the ripest agave piñas, slowly cooked for 36 hours in order to unlock natural sugar.

The brand is also planning to release an Añejo variety in 2026. El Arquero stands out as an Australia-owned tequila brand that will be entering a market traditionally led by overseas imports.
The branding is completely inspired by the Spanish word, the name El Arquero, which means “archer or goalkeeper,” which is also related to Gilchrist’s wicket-keeping past. This symbolizes his blend of cricketing legacy and passion for premium spirits. It is already available across Australia, with the Blanco priced at AU$100 (INR 5.787,95) and the Reposado at AU$120 (INR 6991.94).
