Deutsche Bahn (DB), Germany’s national railway operator, has announced a new policy shift. According to this policy, it is set to impose a total ban on the consumption of alcohol across all 5,400 railway stations in its nationwide network. The phased rollout will achieve complete coverage by October 15, 202. It marks an important and aggressive attempt at protecting railway personnel and curbing rising alcohol-fueled violence. This will inturn create a safer and cleaner environment for millions of daily commuters.
This initiative by Deutsche Bahn (DB) is set to transform a localized policy into a country-wide mandate. For generations, sipping cold beer while waiting on a German platform was an everyday travel thing for the people. It was affectionately referred to as a part of the Feierabendbier or after-work beer culture, but that era is set to end.
The reason behind this decision is an alarming increase in safety incidents and aggression where fellow passengers and staff were targeted. According to the data from Germany’s Federal Interior Ministry, about 1,600 Deutsche Bahn (DB) employees were physically assaulted on the job. This took place in the first five months of the year 2026.
The CEO of Deutsche Bahn (DB), Evelyn Palla, said that the decision is not an act of moral prohibition. It is actually an important necessity for transit safety and the workplace. She mentioned that protecting their employees and passengers is what they take seriously.
The final impetus for the nationwide decision came after a brutal incident took place in Baden - Wurttemberg. During a routine ticket inspection on board a regional train, a 26-year-old railway security officer was assaulted by an intoxicated passenger.
The altercation escalated, and the train door suddenly opened, leading to the officer falling out of the moving train. The incident completely shocked all the railway workers. This pushed the unions and police to demand better security at stations.

Rather than imposing the rule all at once and bringing in an abrupt overnight change, Deutsche Bahn (DB) is rolling out the policy in structured stages.
Phase 1 (Existing Bans): The targeted alcohol bans are already active at roughly 30 high-traffic stations. This includes major hubs in Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich and Cologne.
Phase 2 (September Ban): The ban will expand to key transit nodes on September 1, 2026. This includes Berlin Gesundbrunnen, Braunschweig, Berlin Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) and Kiel.
Phase 3 (Complete Coverage): Every train station across Deutsche Bahn (DB) and its 33,400-kilometer network will fall under the ban completely by October 15, 2026.
This enforcement will be completely handled and monitored by the German Federal Police (Bundespolizei) and DB Security (DB Sicherheit). The initial enforcement strategies will focus completely on public announcements, clear signage, and verbal warnings. Travelers who refuse to comply will be removed from the station property immediately. Repeat offenders will face formal station bans (Hausverbot). This will legally bar them from entering rail concourses under penalty.

While a nationwide station ban is in the pipeline, Deutsche Bahn (DB) shows the success metrics gathered from the stations that have been early adopters.
Back in 2024, when the Hamburg Central Station imposed a localized alcohol ban, the station management witnessed a sharp drop in all violent activities. They also witnessed a reduction in loitering by heavily intoxicated groups and a decrease in broken glass and platform litter. Passengers, especially late-night travellers, felt comparatively very safe and found the stations to be very clean.
Similar outcomes were observed in Cologne and Munich, which reinforced the DB’s conviction that removing alcohol will surely help in higher passenger satisfaction and lower crime rates.
