Singapore is famous for its food, its hawker centers and its drinking culture. Of the many beer brands available in the country, Tiger Beer is one of the most well known. It's the blue and silver lager with the tiger on the bottle, one of Singapore's most iconic home grown brands.
The question arises, why is Tiger Beer so popular in Singapore? It's not just the taste. It was first brewed in 1932 and its story is an important part of Singapore's brewing history. It was a cheap substitute for imported beer at the time and has since evolved over the years into the lager it is known as internationally today. The Tiger Beer story is an interesting one in Singapore’s brewing heritage.
Tiger Beer was launched in Singapore on 1st October 1932 by Malayan Breweries Limited, founded in 1931 as a joint venture between Fraser & Neave and Heineken of the Netherlands. The company's first brewery was situated on Alexandra Road and Tiger was one of the earliest beers to be brewed in Singapore.
Before Tiger Beer arrived, Singapore's beer market depended mostly on imported European and other foreign beers, which were quite expensive. Tiger Beer found a solution to the issue by releasing a local lager which was refreshing, cool and perfectly suited to the climate. This move went a long way in Singapore's beer history.

Imported beer was expensive, and Tiger offered a local alternative that was in high demand. It was very popular with British servicemen in Malaya. A study by Singapore's National Library Board found that Tiger accounted for over two-thirds of the beer consumed in British Malaya in the first two years after its launch.
Tiger Beer became a familiar name in hawker centers, kopitiams, and all the different places where people would go to drink over the years. The brand integrated itself with local food and drinking culture. The brand grew up alongside the country, and advertising over the years reflected the various communities and different eras in Singapore's history.

Tiger Beer launched in 1932 with the successful slogan "Time for a Tiger". By 1935 they were exporting to Hong Kong and beyond. Demand was such that Malayan Breweries expanded their plant in 1937 and again in 1939.
The brand continued through the major events of the period. During the shortages that followed World War II, a lighter version called Tiger Cub was introduced. Canned beer was launched around the time of Singapore's independence in 1965. International expansion followed, with the brand entering the UK and Germany in 1981. Production moved to a modern brewery in Tuas by 1990, and Malayan Breweries became Asia Pacific Breweries.

Tiger Beer's history is peppered with some interesting events. It won its first international beer award in 1939. It went on to win awards at the World Beer Cup in 2004 and again in 2010.
Another interesting bit of Tiger Beer history is the link to the Raffles Hotel. The Raffles Hotel management have an account of a meeting between F&N and Heineken executives at the hotel which ultimately led to the formation of Malayan Breweries. There's also the story of a tiger which escaped from a circus and was shot at the Raffles Hotel in 1902, which is the reason for the name Tiger Beer.
Tiger has built up a significant international footprint. A 2026 announcement from Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore stated that the brand is available in over 60 markets with over 95% of its sales volume coming from outside of Singapore. It's still very much a Singapore brand.
Info for the article came from Tiger Beer's own website, Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore, the National Library Board Singapore's BiblioAsia publications and a Straits Times piece which Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore republished.
Tiger Beer's popularity in Singapore is down to a mixture of history, availability, local culture and brand recognition. It started as a local brew to provide an alternative to the rather expensive imported beers available in 1932 and has slowly become part of Singaporean drinking culture.
Today, Tiger Beer is an internationally recognized lager brand, but its Singaporean origins remain an important element of its story. After nine decades, the brand continues to hold an important place in the country's brewing history.
