DWAAR SIPAHI is a premium craft whisky from Globus Spirits, the range also includes DŌAAB Indian Craft Whisky and TERAI Indian Craft Gin. SIPAHI is the inaugural expression in the DWAAR range, which is inspired by India's historic forts and their imposing gates.
DWAAR is a name which refers to a gateway or doorway and is traditionally associated with protection, strength and stature. The brand is using that very concept to link Indian heritage with modern-day whisky-making. DWAAR SIPAHI is not an Indian single malt. It is a combination of aged Indian single malts with Scotch whisky. The Indian six row barley is sourced from Rajasthan and the whisky is finished in Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry casks from Spain.
One of the more interesting things about Globus Spirits DWAAR SIPAHI is the cask finishing. The spirit is finished in PX sherry casks from the Sherry Triangle in Andalusia. PX is a sweet sherry and casks which have previously been used to age PX can have a significant impact on the character of the whisky, lending a layer of richness and fruitiness. This is the intent of the finishing process with SIPAHI.
The whisky is also chill filtered, which helps to prevent it going cloudy when it's chilled or diluted with water. It's a mixture of Indian malt whisky, Scotch whisky and Spanish cask. The result is a product that is very much an Indian whisky, but one that has been produced using international techniques.

As per the official tasting notes DWAAR SIPAHI has a complex nose of refined oak, delicate florals, dried fruit, vanilla and a touch of spice. The palate is silky and rounded with a good amount of wood, toffee sweetness, dried fruit and warming spices. There's a very subtle smokiness which is there but doesn't really take over.
The finish is all lingering oak, soft toffee, gentle spice and a restrained smoky warmth. Those are the notes provided by the brand themselves rather than an independent assessment. They do however point to a whisky that is in balance between the sweet, the wood and the spice with the PX sherry cask finish being very much in evidence.

As alcohol prices in India are state dependent due to state excise duties and taxes applicable, the final price will vary from market to market.
DWAAR SIPAHI will be available on a phased basis in six markets: Rajasthan, Haryana, Goa, Punjab, Chandigarh and Delhi. There is no definitive retail launch date at this stage for any of the markets. Maharashtra is not part of the initial list and there is no date confirmed for that market.
