Karnataka Deputy CM Suggests Increasing Storage Limits; Allowing Bars On Beaches

The Karnataka government has been facing a persistent challenge of illegal alcohol trade in the state. This issue affects public health, public revenue and also contributes to various social issues. To tackle this issue, the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, Doddalahalli Kempegowda Shivakumar, has suggested two key measures. One is to increase the storage limit of alcohol at homes, and the other is to allow bars on beaches.

Karnataka Dy CM Suggests Key Measures

The Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, D.K. Shivakumar, during the ongoing winter session of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, suggested these two measures in order to curb the practice of illegal alcohol trade in the state. The unregulated consumption and sale of alcohol increases the risk of violation of law and order, accidents, and adulterated liquor. CM’s proposals aim to regulate and legalize certain aspects of alcohol consumption that are restricted currently.

Proposal To Permit Bars On Beaches

One of the proposals mentioned permitting bars on beaches, which is a popular leisure spot in the state. Currently, the commercial alcohol sale and consumption at beaches and other public areas is strictly prohibited. According to the Deputy Chief Minister, allowing bars to open on beaches can help in providing regulated spaces for people to enjoy alcoholic beverages responsibly.

This change will actually increase tourism revenue and reduce the demand for illegal alcohol, which generally takes place in hidden locations near popular tourist beaches. The approach to legalizing bars on beaches includes crafting strict laws and regulations to ensure that they maintain hygiene standards and operate responsibly. This key measure could also enhance the overall tourism experience in the state.

Increasing Storage Of Liquor At Home

Along with the proposal to permit bars on beaches, the CM also mentioned increasing the permissible limits for liquor storage at home. Currently, the law of Karnataka restricts the quantity of alcohol that individuals are legally allowed to possess at home. By increasing the limit, the government intends to give people flexibility, which will reduce their reliance on illegal channels.

However, these restrictions might also backfire, as people might hoard huge quantities and later might have to go for illegal sources for social gatherings and private events or social gatherings.

The Deputy Chief Minister mentioned that this measure would come with strict monitoring and penalties. This is to prevent misuse and ensure that higher storage does not turn into illegal distribution or public nuisance.

Summing Up

According to Shivakumar, relaxing certain controls in a regulated manner can help the government to control the illegal trade of alcohol, as underground consumption has made regulation and control difficult for authorities.
