Maya Pistola was founded by Rakshay Dhariwal in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. He noticed the growing love for tequila and agave spirits in India. He recognized the wild Agave Americana plant that was spotted growing on the Deccan Plateau in India as a raw material to craft high-quality agave spirit locally.
The spirit is a completely made-in-India product, as the raw material comes from the Deccan Plateau, distilled in Chittoor and aged, and bottled in Goa. Maya Pistola had to coin its spirit as Agavepura because of the GI (geographical indication) tag for tequila being given only to Mexico.
It drew inspiration from traditional tequila and mezcal, but is a spirit that is adapted to India’s terroir and cultural context. The brand was launched in 2022.
Maya Pistola Agave Spirit is a 100% agave spirit from India and is known for its layered taste profile as well as its smooth texture. The flavor of this spirit includes forward agave notes, which are complemented by mint, green peppercorn, honey, coriander seeds, and fresh citrus.
The spirit has a smooth and silky texture, which comes from aging in different casks, which brings in additional flavors like oak, black pepper, cocoa, vanilla, grass, soft tobacco, and dried figs. The taste is inviting, making it enjoyable neat, on ice, or in cocktails.
Maya Pistola Joven: This variant is a blend of unaged and aged 100% agave spirits with fresh citrus, floral aromas, and a spiced, herbal palate featuring mint and peppercorn. It has a clear light straw color and a medium spicy finish.
Maya Pistola Reposado: This variant is aged for 4-6 months in ex-Bourbon and Virgin American White Oak casks. It is pale gold with aroma of butterscotch, crème brûlée, vanilla, and fruity notes like pineapple and orange marmalade with warm finishing.

Maya Pistola Añejo: Añejo is aged for over 14 months in virgin American white oak barrels. It has a deep golden-brown hue with an oaky aroma of cocoa and dried figs. It has subtle smoky notes, and flavors of caramel and vanilla with a rich profile.
Maya Pistola Extra Añejo: This is a premium variant which is aged for over 36 months in American white oak first and then in ex-Maker’s Mark bourbon barrels. It offers complex flavors, including vanilla, butterscotch, caramel, and dry spice.

This brand, specifically the Extra Añejo variant, has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 48%. The other variants, such as Joven and Reposado, generally have ABVs around 38-40%.
