Old Monk White Rum: Origin, Alcohol Content, Smoothness, Cocktail Pairings

Old Monk’s Glorious History

The lineage of Old Monk traces itself to 1855 Kasauli to Edward Dyer’s humble brewery in Himachal Pradesh. The brewery later merged with Meakin & Co. and formed the Mohan Meakin Private Limited in 1949.

The iconic rum that many still enjoy drinking was said to be a creation by Ved Rattan Mohan. He introduced the Old Monk Rum in 1954, named after Benedictine monks who had inspired his rum recipe. Matured in oak casks for seven years, this dark and spiced rum quickly rose to popularity at a time when liquors like rum were not that accessible to a lot of Indians.

For several decades, Old Monk remained India’s top-selling dark rum. What majorly contributed to its success was its warm and spicy taste and affordable pricing. Loved by people across all age demographics, from college students to army officers, the rum is one of the most iconic alcoholic beverages to be born in India.

Old Monk White Rum: How Is It Made?

While the dark rum made by Old Monk was their star product for many decades, they were quick to launch different varieties to cater to a diverse consumer base. Among the varieties, the Old Monk White Rum stands out effortlessly.

Unlike the classic dark rum, the white rum is aged for only a brief period of time, and sometimes not at all. This helps with producing a distinct, clear spirit with a lighter flavor profile. The rum is also filtered to remove any color that it might have acquired in its brief period of aging. The result is a smooth white rum that is distinct in its flavor profile in comparison to the dark rum.

The white rum variant has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 37.5% which is lesser than the ABV of the dark rum that stands at about 42.8%. This makes Old Monk White Rum a rum that is slightly less intense in its alcohol content – but is potent enough to pack a punch!
