Baileys Alcohol Percentage: How Strong Is Baileys Compared With Beer, Wine & Whisky?

There are very few alcoholic beverages that occupy a special place on the shelf, and Baileys is surely one of them. More commonly known as a liquid dessert poured in a glass rather than a traditional alcoholic spirit, Baileys Irish Cream is loved for its creamy, velvety flavor. However, this smooth, chocolate-vanilla profile often leads drinks to assume that Baileys has very low alcohol content. So let's find out what Baileys alcohol percentage is, as well as how strong it is compared to other spirits.

What Is The Alcoholic Percentage (ABV) Of Baileys?

Baileys Original Irish Cream has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 17 percent. This translates to 34 percent proof. This means that 17 percent of the liquid in every Baileys bottle consists of pure ethanol.

Baileys is categorized as a cream liqueur. Liqueurs are basically alcoholic beverages that are created by combining a base distilled spirit with sweeteners, flavorings, and sometimes even dairy. In Baileys, Irish whiskey is the base spirit used, which is sourced from select distilleries. This spirit is then emulsified with sugar, vanilla, cocoa extracts, and fresh Irish dairy cream.

Why Do Drinkers Love Baileys?

The very first time you take a sip of any spirit like gin, scotch, or vodka, the first thing that you feel is an alcoholic burn. This is because the high alcohol concentration in that spirit triggers the pain receptors on your throat and tongue.

But when you sip Baileys, you don't feel any alcoholic burn. This is because the dairy cream’s fat content coats the palate while the sugar neutralizes the perception of alcohol. Now, because the drink tastes like melted ice cream or some liquid dessert, it becomes much easier and faster to drink than any other spirit.

If you pour a tumbler filled with Baileys over ice, you might feel like you are having a dessert, but you are actually consuming something stronger than table wine or a beer.

Baileys vs Beer

When you compare Baileys with any standard beer in the market, the difference in their alcoholic concentration is very clear. While standard beer’s ABV stands at 4 to 6 percent, Baileys’ ABV stands at 17 percent. Hence, Baileys by volume is about three times stronger than standard beer.

Beer is less concentrated and hence can easily be consumed in larger volumes. At the same time, Baileys is designed to be consumed in smaller quantities. A single measure of Baileys (50 ml) has less alcohol than the entire pint of beer (500 ml), while drinking a modest 100 ml glass of Baileys offers almost the same alcohol payload as an entire bottle of lager (330 ml). So you drink beer by pint because it is weak, but you drink Baileys by shot because it is strong.

Baileys vs Wine

Many people assume that wine is associated with sophisticated dinners and that lingering intoxication is way stronger than sweet liqueurs. But in reality, Baileys is stronger than almost all the standard table wines. A standard white wine has an ABV of 11 to 13 percent, while a standard red wine has an ABV of 13 to 14.5 percent. At the same time, Baileys has an ABV of 17 percent.

Note: Fortified wines, which have distilled spirits added to them like Sherry, Port, or Marsala, surpass Baileys in strength. It typically ranges between 18 and 20 percent ABV.

People generally pour Baileys over ice at home without any measurements; hence, a generous glass can easily match or exceed the alcoholic content of a glass of standard wine.

Baileys vs Whisky

Because Baileys contains genuine Irish whiskey as its base, this comparison between Baileys and Whisky is a bit interesting. A standard whisky is bottled at 40 to 50 percent ABV, which is 80 proof. At the same time, Baileys has an ABV of 17 percent.

Straight whisky is about 2.5 times stronger than Baileys. The reason is that to make Baileys, the high-proof Irish whisky is blended with Irish dairy cream, sugar, and flavorings. This blending reduces the alcohol concentration in the whiskey by more than half; this blend takes it to 17 percent ABV from a potent 40 percent ABV.

The alcohol content of one shot of neat whisky, which is 1.5 oz, is equivalent to 3.5 oz of Baileys.

We all love Baileys, and to enjoy it the right way, I use some mindful tips which you can use too! I use a jigger or measuring cup to measure Baileys in order to keep the pours at 50 to 75 ml. Serving Baileys on the rocks can help you dilute its alcohol concentration fr a gentle sip.

Summing Up

Baileys’ alcohol content is at 17 percentage ABV. It sits in a very unique category. This is because it is stronger than beer and wine but milder and sweeter than whisky. By measuring and treating it right, just like other spirits, you can easily enjoy its smooth and creamy character without the risk of feeling drunk.
