Indian Spirits Make History: Camikara Named ‘Global Rum Brand of the Year’ at Spirits Business Awards 2026

In a significant milestone for the Indian spirits industry, Camikara Rum, produced by Piccadily Agro Industries Limited, has been clinching top global honors, effectively placing Indian rum on the world map alongside legendary Caribbean and Latin American labels.

Traditionally, India has been a whiskey-dominant market, with rum often relegated to the mass-market, molasses-based category. However, Camikara – which translates to "Liquid Gold" in Sanskrit – is leading a "Rum Renaissance" by proving that India can produce world-class, sipping-grade aged rums from pure sugarcane juice.

A Historic Global Triumph

The brand has recently achieved a series of "firsts" for an Indian spirit, cementing its dominance in the international arena throughout 2025 and 2026.

2026 Accolades: The momentum has only intensified this year. At the Global Rum & Cachaça Masters 2026 in the UK, Camikara made history as the only Indian brand to win both Master and Gold medals simultaneously:

  • Camikara 8-Year-Old: Awarded the Master Medal, the competition's highest possible distinction.
  • Camikara 3-Year-Old: Secured a Gold Medal for the second consecutive year.
  • U.S. Market Dominance: At The Fifty Best tasting in New York, the 8-Year-Old expression received a Double Gold, while the 3-Year-Old took home Gold, demonstrating remarkable consistency across different global judging panels.

2025 Milestone: These wins follow the brand's crowning achievement at the Spirits Business Awards 2025 in London, where Camikara was named the "Global Rum Brand of the Year." This victory was historic as it marked the first time an Indian brand outperformed iconic houses from traditional rum-producing regions to take the top title.

Redefining Indian Rum: From Molasses To Pure Cane Juice

What sets Camikara apart is its production philosophy. While 90% of Indian rums are made from molasses (a byproduct of sugar refining), Camikara is India’s first pure cane juice rum.

This method, similar to the Rhum Agricole style of the French West Indies, involves:

  1. Fresh Harvest: Sugarcane is crushed within 36 hours of harvest to preserve its vibrant, grassy essence.
  2. No Additives: The spirit contains 100% natural ingredients - no added sugar, caramel, or artificial coloring.
  3. Pot Still Distillation: The juice is fermented and distilled in copper pot stills, the same used for Piccadily’s award-winning Indri Single Malt Whisky.

The Role Of Indian Terroir And The "Angel’s Share"

The maturation process is heavily influenced by the extreme climate of North India (Haryana). The subtropical heat and humidity accelerate the interaction between the liquid and the American oak barrels.

However, this accelerated aging comes at a high cost. In India, the "Angel’s Share" – the amount of spirit lost to evaporation – is roughly 10–12% per year. For Camikara’s flagship 12-Year-Old expression, a staggering 94% of the original liquid evaporated over its maturation period, leaving only 6% to be bottled. This rarity and concentration of flavor are what give the rum its "Liquid Gold" reputation.

Reviving An Ancient Legacy

The success of Camikara is also a cultural homecoming. According to Siddhartha Sharma, the promoter of Piccadily Distilleries, India’s relationship with sugarcane dates back to antiquity, with references to fermented cane beverages like Sidhu found in the Rigveda.

By launching premium expressions (aged 3, 8, and 12 years), the distillery aims to dismantle the colonial mindset that prioritized imported whiskey over indigenous spirits. They are positioning rum not just as a "winter drink" or a mixer, but as a complex sipping spirit for connoisseurs.

Summing Up

Camikara’s rise signifies a seismic shift in the global spirits landscape. By leveraging India’s position as one of the world's largest sugarcane producers and applying artisanal distillation techniques, Piccadily Agro Industries has successfully challenged the Caribbean’s centuries-long dominance. As Camikara continues to rack up "Master" and "Gold" medals, it serves as a beacon for the "Make in India" initiative, proving that Indian craftsmanship can define luxury on the global stage.
