Gen Z Is Drinking Less Than Previous Generations - Here’s What Studies Show

A quiet but significant shift is underway in global drinking habits, and it’s being driven by Generation Z. Multiple studies now suggest that young adults today are consuming less alcohol than millennials and baby boomers did at the same age - a change that could reshape the future of social drinking.

Gen Z Drinking Less Than Millennials

A widely cited report published in The BMJ highlights just how stark this shift is. According to the study, around 25% of people aged 16 to 24 in England reported not drinking at all in the past year, the highest proportion across any adult age group.

This isn’t a one-off spike either. The same research shows that non-drinking among young people has been rising steadily over the past decade, with fewer young adults engaging in frequent drinking compared to older age groups.

A Long-Term Cultural Shift

The decline in alcohol consumption among Gen Z is not limited to one country. Research cited by health institutions and global studies indicates that this trend has been building for nearly two decades. A report referenced by the Cleveland Clinic found that alcohol abstinence among young adults has steadily increased since the early 2000s, with nearly 30% of young people avoiding alcohol entirely in recent years.

Why Gen Z Is Drinking Less

Experts say there isn’t a single reason behind this shift; it’s a mix of lifestyle, awareness, and changing priorities. One of the biggest factors is health consciousness. Gen Z is far more aware of the physical and mental effects of alcohol.

Many young adults now associate drinking with poor sleep, anxiety, and long-term health risks, leading them to cut back or quit altogether.

Mental health awareness is another key driver. Instead of turning to alcohol as a coping mechanism, younger people are more likely to seek therapy, fitness, or alternative stress-relief methods. There’s also a strong social element at play.

Unlike previous generations, Gen Z has grown up in the age of social media, where image and self-control often matter more than excess.

Perhaps the most interesting shift is how alcohol itself is being perceived. For many in Gen Z, drinking is no longer central to socialising. Instead, there’s a growing interest in moderation, mindful drinking, or even complete abstinence.

In fact, recent data suggests that a significant portion of Gen Z either drinks occasionally or not at all, with some opting for non-alcoholic beverages or alternatives instead.

This has already begun to impact industries globally. From the rise of alcohol-free bars to the popularity of zero-proof spirits, brands are adapting to a generation that is redefining what it means to go out and have a good time.

Summing Up

While older generations continue to drive a large share of alcohol consumption, the behaviour of Gen Z points toward a future where drinking may no longer be the default.

That said, experts caution that the trend doesn’t mean alcohol use has disappeared entirely. Binge drinking and substance use still exist within pockets of the younger population. But overall, the data is clear: Gen Z is approaching alcohol differently, more cautiously, more consciously, and often, less frequently than ever before.
