How Long Does Beer Stay Fresh After Opening? Storage Facts Explained

Once you open a can of beer, what happens to it? If you decide not to finish it, can you keep it back in the fridge and more importantly, will it still be fresh? While an unopened can is able to stay fresh for months on end if stored properly, an opened can is an entirely different story as it almost immediately loses its freshness. That does not mean it is unsafe to drink, here is what you need to understand about the storage of beer and how long it remains safe for consumption.

How Long Does Open Beer Last?

Beer is best consumed within a few hours of opening, as once it gets exposed to air, the carbonation, flavor and aroma start to fade away. A can once opened cannot be resealed, once it's poured into a glass it begins to lose its fizz due to the exposure to the air. While some reports state that an open ban will stay fresh for between 24 to 48 hours, there is not universally agreed upon timeframe for how long a can of beer can be left open.

Why Does Beer Lose Its Freshness After Opening?

Due to the pressure inside a sealed container, the carbon dioxide stays in the beer therefore resulting in no loss of carbonation. Once that pressure is released, the gas has room to disperse, thereby making the beer flat and lose some of its flavor and aroma.

Once the air enters the container, oxidation can slowly start to create different aromas and tastes. This is the cardboard-like feeling that you get from beer when it has been left in the open for long. Craft beers can lose their distinctive aroma and flavor, whilst lagers can develop a new strange flavor.

The temperature in which the beer is stored is also an important factor as warmer climates lead to staling, which is why beer is best served cold. Too much exposure to sunlight can lead to unpleasant aromas developing.

Refrigeration is the best option available as it not only helps with temperature control but also protection from the sunlight. It's best to refrigerate it as soon as possible as the cold temperatures help slow down any chemical reactions that might compromise the freshness of the beer. Resealing the bottle or restoring it in a different container can also help, however any exposure to the area can lead to carbonization of the beer. Refrigeration also ensures that the beer is not exposed to direct sunlight, thereby ensuring it cannot affect the aroma.

Most importantly, do not leave an open can in the fridge indefinitely as the refrigerator does not help maintain the original quality for several days.

If you leave an open can of beer in warm conditions, it is safest to discard it immediately as it is in direct contact with dust, insects and other microorganisms. Beer that is refrigerated and properly sealed can be preserved however it will slowly lose its quality over a period of time. The refrigeration only slows down the process.

Summing Up

Ideally it’s best to finish your drink within a few hours, this ensures that you enjoy your beer with its original flavor, aroma and carbonation. Refrigeration is a temporary solution, however over a period of time it will go stale and therefore unsafe for consumption. Ultimately, the best way to enjoy a beer is at the time you pop open the bottle or can.
