Back On Top: How Vodka Is Reclaiming Its Throne In The Indian Spirits Scene

India’s spirits market has always been dominated by rum and whisky for centuries. But recently, the market has suddenly witnessed a resurgence of vodka. There was a time when people only knew whisky and rum in the spirits market and avoided spirits like tequila and vodka. However, now, vodka has made a comeback, and how! The vodka market has been valued at USD 4.50 billion in 2024, and it is expected to grow to USD 7.40 billion by 2033 at a 5.10% CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate). But what is the main reason behind vodka suddenly reclaiming its throne in the Indian spirits scene? Well, let's find out!

Vodka Is Reclaiming Its Throne In The Indian Spirits Market

Vodka’s resurgence across India's spirits market stems from lifestyle upgrades, social evolution, and smart adaptations. One of the major reasons for this is Western influence and urbanization, which have transformed social drinking. This is especially true among young adults, as they have begun favouring vodka’s mixability over heavier spirits.

Spending Power, Cocktail Revolution, and More

The middle class and young professionals in India’s tier-1 cities, Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore, like millennials and Gen Z, are earning more from tech jobs, startups, and services. Also, with the national budget being announced, people have a little extra cash, which makes them ditch heavy, traditional drinks for something smoother, versatile, and premium like vodka. It offers an upscale vibe easily, letting people upgrade their social game on a budget.

One reason for the rise of vodka in India is the cocktail revolution. Vodka’s neutral flavor allows mixologists to easily blend it with a variety of ingredients, such as lime, mango, chili, soda, and herbs. This versatility has made vodka a standout choice in India’s thriving bar scene.

Another reason is the growing social acceptance of drinking. In urban areas and even in tier 2 cities like Pune and Chandigarh. Drinking alcohol is no longer considered taboo. Influenced by global media, travel, and social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, more people are exposed to various spirits, recipes, and trends. Viral clips showcasing easy cocktail hacks attract newcomers eager to appear trendy at social gatherings or to simply try vodka for themselves.

Tier 2 and 3 Cities Are Rewriting The Rulebook

Health is another main reason. Compared to whisky and rum, vodka mixes well into low-calorie drinks that fit those people’s lifestyles who are leaning more towards low ABV drinks. With vodka as the base, one only needs to add soda water or fresh juice, and it's "cleaner” like Vodka Soda and Greyhound cocktails.

Utsav Kedia, Vice President of Business Growth, Great Galleon Ventures Limited, shared his insights on vodka’s comeback in the Indian market. “Everyone’s talking about India as the world’s next big spirits market. But if you only look at metros, you’ll miss where the real story is happening. Tier II and III cities are rewriting the rulebook. Consumers here are informed and increasingly curious. Their choices are driven less by brand name and more by quality, accessibility, and value that feels honest. We’ve seen this play out first-hand. Vodka and ready-to-drink formats are leading growth because they fit these consumers’ lives; they’re easier to store and serve, and offer versatile flavours. Price matters, but so does quality. "

"The new buyer from Indore or Nagpur doesn’t just want imported cues; they want Indian-made spirits that can stand tall next to them. For producers, this shift means rethinking the product brief entirely, smaller formats, stronger design, cleaner flavours, smarter pricing, and above all, consistency. Tier II and III markets aren’t emerging. They’ve already arrived. The industry needs to start building for them, not around them.”
